Alejandro Dumas (Padre)
Nació el 24 de julio de 1802 en Villers-Cotterêts, Aisne, Francia.
Era hijo de un General y nieto de un noble que se había radicado en Santo Domingo.
Su educación fue más basada en las lecturas, especialmente de aventuras de los siglos XVI y XVII, que realizó con profusión mientras trabajó con el Duque de Orleans, en París. Era también un asiduo concurrente a las representaciones teatrales y sus primeros escritos fueron obras de teatro. Escribió en este género, Enrique III y su corte, en 1829, y la pieza romántica Cristina, en 1830; ambas de gran éxito en las tablas de la época.
Fue un escritor muy prolífico, publicó alrededor de 1.200 volúmenes, aunque se supone que muchas de ellas fueron escritas en colaboración con otros escritores menores.
Pero la mayor fama en la literatura romántica francesa la alcanzó con sus novelas históricas: "Los tres mosqueteros" (1844) y "El conde de Montecristo" (1844).
Otras obras de éxito son, en teatro, "Antonio" (1831), "La torre de Nesle" (1832), "Catherine Howard" (1834), "Kean, o desorden y genio" (1838) y "El alquimista" (1839).
Fue nombrado como Dumas padre puesto que su hijo tenía el mismo nombre y también fue escritor.
Obtuvo por sus publicaciones enormes ingresos, pero apenas alcanzaban a pagar sus gastos, conservar la finca en las cercanías de París (Montecristo), mantener a numerosas amantes (una de las cuales era la madre de su hijo Alexandre), adquirir obras de arte y afrontar grandes pérdidas económicas en empresas riesgosas, lo que lo llevó a terminar sus días prácticamente en bancarrota.
Murió el 5 de diciembre de 1870.

Sus personajes presentan problemas de seres marginados y víctimas de los convencionalismos.
Es autor de "El hijo natural", "Las ideas de Madame Aubray" y "La dama de las Camelias".
