Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Stanford University Medical Center)
Description: This book presents a very practical approach to treating mild to moderate psoriasis patients. Topical treatments, phototherapy, laser, and systemic medications including the biologic agents are discussed in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. A step ladder approach is suggested and the rationale and scientific data for choosing one treatment over another is nicely outlined. I liked the common sense views expressed by the authors. The molecular biology of the mechanisms involved for various treatments is presented in a clear fashion.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide dermatologists with the current state of knowledge in treating patients with mild to moderate psoriasis. These objectives are well met.
Audience: The audience is clinical dermatologists who treat patients with psoriasis.
Features: Among the strengths of the book are the excellent practical treatment plans offered for psoriasis. The chapters are organized by the particular treatment medications and modalities. The authors discuss when it would be most appropriate to pursue a certain approach and, when there is an inadequate clinical response, they suggest alternative approaches. The book reviews side effects of the medications as well as their mechanisms of action. Very specific treatment guidelines are outlined for scalp and nail psoriasis. There are few clinical color photographs of psoriasis, but this does not detract from the usefulness of the book.
Assessment: This is a valuable practical clinical reference for treating patients with psoriasis. Of course, you must also purchase the companion book, Moderate-to-Severe Psoriasis, 3rd edition (informa Healthcare, 2009), to complete your therapeutic knowledge base on the subject. You will not need any other references for treating psoriasis if you add these two books to your library.
