Overview

Like most live albums, this two-record set was a profit-taking release on which the artist re-presented many of her old songs for a new acceptance now that she had a larger pop audience. Backed by the pop-jazz ensemble the L.A. Express Mitchell reprised the best from her first five albums, pointedly ignoring Court and Spark, and including two new cuts, "Love or Money" and "Jericho."

I have a lot of live albums, but this tops them all. While it sounds odd that Joni Mitchell should be backed up by a jazz-rock quintet, the combination works quite effectively. The new sound lends a new freshness to the songs, and some are completely revamped for the better (''Woodstock'', ''Carey'', ''Both Sides Now''). Even ''Rainy Night House'' is much better than on the original album. Of course, Joni is always best by herself on guitar or piano, and half the album is just that. Her early songs sound more confident, and ''The Circle Game'' was practically WRITTEN to be done in concert, with the entire audience singing along (''We're gonna put on our best out-of-tune voices now''). Even Joni's singing is improved - there is none of that irritating wavering between octaves. Plus, there are two new songs to boot, both of which are welcome additions to any Joni collection. So is this album.
