Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
At only seventeen years old, Miley Cyrus, star of the Disney Channel's Hannah Montana, is one of the biggest superstars around, and this "Star Biographies" title examines her rapid rise to success. Cyrus used to watch her father, country star Billy Ray Cyrus, perform, which made her want to be a performer, too. Cyrus was only eleven years old when she sent in many audition tapes to the executives at the Disney Channel. She competed with over one thousand girls for the title role on the show, and won the part, despite producers initially believing she was too young for the role. The show led to Cyrus recording albums and touring both as herself and as her Hannah Montana alter-ego. The author goes on to discuss what it is like on the Hannah Montana set, what touring is like, her charity work, and what Cyrus likes to do at home during her time off. Recently, Cyrus wrote a memoir and her future plans include more acting and singing, as well as a fashion line. Devoted fans will probably enjoy this despite its slight content, which covers basic facts. This series may attract older teen readers interested in the celebrities, but the wholesome content and writing level are aimed at more of a tween audience. Short chapters, bright colors, a varied layout, quotes from interviews, sidebars, and ample pictures make this short book a quick read. A glossary, further reading, index, and links to internet sites via the publisher's FactHound website are included. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor

Gr 3-6-These fluffy biographies are visually attractive but have little substance. The bold graphics and colorful sidebars give the series a teen-magazine feel, with topics such as hairstyles and fashion choices at the forefront. Short, simple sentences discuss family background, career highlights, and other personal bits of information that generally stick to more positive, less controversial topics. Tweens looking for fun browsing will be drawn to these books, but that's about their only use.
