Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
Scouting, attacking, and transporting people and cargo are the main jobs of military helicopters. Young readers interested in flying machines will find much to like in this addition to Bobby Kalman's "Vehicles on the Move" series. The who, what, when, where and why are all covered here as young readers learn about the different kinds of military helicopters and the different roles they play in the armed forces. Readers fascinated by flying machines will love the chapters on the parts of the military helicopter and the pilot's gear, particularly the well-chosen photos used to illustrate both. Ten different military helicopters are profiled, including the Black Hawk series, the Eurocopter Tiger and the Chinook. Speed, weapons capabilities, purpose and in many cases, cost, are profiled for each. Written for young readers at a grade two reading level, chapters and sentences are both short. Unlike many nonfiction books in this genre, this text is written with the understanding the young readers do not have the patience to turn to the glossary to find out what a word means; large concept words are explained in simple terms immediately within the text. A glossary is included for further clarification, along with a table of contents and a brief index. Early elementary classrooms working on transportation units will find this book a welcome addition to their resource library. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
