This volume contains papers from the 2nd conference on the military orders, held at the Museum of St. John, London, in September 1996. under the auspices of the London Centre for the Study of the Crusades. The conference included scholars from 19 countries who presented a total of 53 papers on subfrcts covering a chronological period from the 11th century to the present day, and a geographical spread from Portugal to the Middle East, and Malta to the Baltic states. A large number of the papers are published in this volume.

The papers are divided into four sections: medical work, military activity, internal organization and life, and relations with rulers and donors. Each section is arranged ut general chronological order.
