Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Sarah Hudson
In this introduction for YA readers, Cohen discusses several aspects of the coming millennium, including the calculation of its arrival, predictions of doom, religious and Christian interpretations of the event, and the computer problems expected with its arrival. People argue over the calendar on which the coming of the millennium is based; many religions use calendars other than the calendar used by the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain. Some religions feel the coming of the millennium may mean the coming of the Apocalypse. The book also discusses extravagant parties planned to celebrate the coming of the year 2000. Cohen's work offers a simple explanation of the concern and excitement occurring as 2000 approaches. The cover is attractive and has an electrifying version of the Statue of Liberty on it, reminiscent of a science fiction novel. The author includes black-and-white photographs and drawings, but the quality of the paper adds a grainy touch to the photographs. Purchase where there is interest in the millennium or a following of the "strange but true" type of book. Not an essential purchase, but the price is right for a browsing paperback collection. Illus.
