Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Kathleen Diane Pickrell, BSN, MSN (Indiana State University)
Description: This is a current, authoritative, comprehensive guide to new and existing vocabulary terms for health professionals. Since the previous edition in 1997, 3,900 new terms have been added and obsolete terminology has been deleted. Existing terms have been reviewed and revised for currency. Content includes vocabulary, encyclopedic topics, and appendixes.
Purpose: The purpose is to be a premier resource for practical, accurate, and interdisciplinary healthcare terms and provide a current, dynamic vocabulary for health professionals. The book is necessary in order to keep abreast of new and evolving terminology as well as archaic or obsolete terms. The book addresses the authors' purpose satisfactorily.
Audience: According to the author, the intended readers are those health professionals in medicine, nursing, and allied health fields. The author is credible and is backed by an editorial board and established consultants and contributors who are credentialed in their respective fields of medicine, nursing, and allied health.
Features: The book does not just focus on vocabulary terminology and encyclopedic entries. It includes color plates for a greater understanding of human anatomy and function, spellchecker software on a CD-ROM, and a companion website containing supplemental material and links to provide reliable, updated information. The authors have changed the book's format and dimensions to improve portability and usefulness. A new "windows" feature allows experts in health science to expand on entries and provide valuable information and insight into topics of interest.
Assessment: Health professionals need to be informed of new content, terminology, and the latest in taxonomies and this book provides that information. Cross-referenced material helps the reader gain an even broader knowledge of the most current terminology. It compares favorably to other similar books.
