Reviewer: Jeffrey L. Apfelbaum, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: In this seventh edition, the authors and editors provide one of the most complete and thorough resources on the global scope and practice of contemporary anesthesiology. The editors suggest that this edition represents the most extensive revision of this book undertaken to date.
Purpose: This update was specifically designed to retain the strengths of the previous edition, while responding to a multitude of new and ever-changing aspects of anesthesiology. In addition to significant revisions and updates to existing chapters, the book includes 13 new chapters, more than 30 new authors, and 1,500 full-color illustrations. The new chapters were added in response to an analysis of the extensive changes in the scope of anesthesiology. The increasing importance of critical care medicine dictated the creation of five chapters and other new chapters cover sleep, memory, consciousness, ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, and emphasize advances in information technology.
Audience: This book serves as a comprehensive foundation for all trainees in the medical specialty of anesthesiology and a user-friendly, but extremely complete resource for experienced anesthesia professionals.
Features: This is the most inclusive and detailed analysis in presentation and textbook form of the medical specialty of anesthesiology. The collective background and expertise of the 204 author contributors makes them extraordinarily well qualified as authorities in the field. The book is divided into nine sections that include an introduction, anesthetic physiology, anesthetic pharmacology, anesthetic management, adult subspecialty management, pediatric anesthesia, postoperative care (as distinguished from intensive care medicine), critical care medicine, and a special section on ancillary responsibilities and problems (including operating room management, electrical safety, environmental safety, and statistical methodology). It is accompanied by access to one of two dedicated Expert Consult websites. The basic edition includes the complete, fully searchable text online. The premium edition includes access to the online text plus regular content updates, references linked to Medline abstracts and full-text articles, downloadable image library, drug database, self-assessment questions, and an extensive video library featuring full-length video presentations of anesthesia procedures.
Assessment: The changes and updates in the seventh edition of this book clearly justify replacing the previous edition. It will be a valuable addition to the library of any practicing anesthesia professional.

This fifth edition book, last published in 1994, reflects the continuing need to update comprehensive texts in the increasingly complex field of anesthesia. The editors review the entire spectrum of anesthesiology. Each chapter contains a thorough discussion of a particular topic, which leads to some overlap of material, yet these chapters dovetail nicely with each other, with comparisons and contrasts in the differing opinions that exist in this evolving field. The worthy goal of providing a most complete analysis and presentation of the field of anesthesia is met by this well-written, well-illustrated text. This is a great package of information for anesthesia residents and practitioners. As always, a thorough consideration of pertinent topics is presented as well as the additional new areas of interest. Most of the contributors are well known professors at prestigious anesthesia residency programs. All areas of anesthesia are discussed, with the addition of new areas such as information technology. Chapters are broken down into subsections, such as preoperative assessment, subspecialty management, monitoring, etc. A CD-ROM enhances the learning and reviewing process with visual aids to the reader; there are also video portions in which technical procedures are performed, and these also enhance the reader's appreciation for the complexity of the procedure while simplifying the pertinent points. A CD graphic placed in the text denotes a pertinent video section available on the CD-ROM. An effective index and bulleted overviews of chapters are also helpful. Color graphics, headings, and titles draw attention and enable the reader to more easily locate specific information in thetext and read and understand the illustrations more easily. Both the quality and quantity of references is appropriate. The text is broken up into two volumes, and this groups subspecialty management with critical care into the second volume but makes the first volume heavier than the second. As in the past, this compilation continues to be the most comprehensive anesthesia text. With the addition of color, more illustrations, and the CD-ROM, this book is now easier to read and understand than ever before.

This is the fourth edition of a textbook that has long been one of the mainstays of anesthesiology resident teaching in North America. The two-volume work is designed to be a comprehensive teaching textbook and reference, intended to cover the art and science of anesthesiology. The audience includes both anesthesiology residents and practicing anesthesiologists. The unique features are: (1) peer review by a panel of consulting editors, each of whom is an internationally recognized expert in his or her area of anesthesiology; (2) a complete updating of each chapter from the previous edition, including references to current anesthesiology literature; (3) new chapters covering laser and laparoscopic surgery, organ transplantation, and new therapies, such as surfactant therapy. Information on the latest developments in anesthesiology, such as the use of the laryngeal mask airway, transesophageal echocardiography, new volatile anesthetic agents, and muscle relaxants have been included in this edition. Additionally, a new section is a color atlas of regional anesthesia. This is one of the most complete teaching and reference textbooks covering the field of anesthesiology. It should be on the shelves of every anesthesiology department and hospital library. There are a few errors, particularly in the atlas of regional anesthesia, where needles have been misdrawn and epidural space anatomy oversimplified. As with any comprehensive text attempting to cover a field as broad as anesthesiology, chapters are necessarily short and cover the basic information, often ignoring controversial areas. These factors make this a better teaching text for residents than reference book on various subspecialitiesof anesthesiology.
**** The third edition (1990) of this comprehensive, state-of-the-art reference text is cited in Brandon-Hill. The two volumes contain 86 chapters grouped in six sections: introduction; scientific principles; anesthesia management; subspecialty management; critical care medicine; and ancillary responsibilities and problems. This edition is revised and updated to reflect changes that have occurred since publication of the previous edition: the introduction of new drugs; the increased understanding of pharmacology and basic mechanisms; the increased use of laser and laparoscopic surgical approaches; the increase in transplantations; and the addition of new therapies. This edition also adds a specially commissioned, full color atlas of regional anesthesia procedures. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
