With numerous well-respected publications on antiques and many decades of experience in the field, Miller (Miller's Antiques Encyclopedia) is no doubt an expert on the subject. This update includes all new photographs (over 8,000), recent pricing information, and current market trends. The handbook is organized into 23 sections, with emphasis on the porcelain, pottery, Oriental items, furniture, and decorative arts markets. After a short introduction to each market, Miller presents important pieces with short descriptions and ranges of value. Each page contains up to ten full-color photographs, making the book as beautiful as it is informative. The author focuses special attention on certain objects in her "Judith Picks" boxes, and highlighted boxes offer information on why some items are more valuable than others. Miller attempts with these extras to teach readers how to do their own appraisals, and these boxes certainly do impart a sense of how value can be estimated. The book is fully indexed and includes a period chart, key to illustrations, and directory of auctioneers and specialists. VERDICT This update should be on the bookshelf of any serious collector or dealer—buyer beware, however; the resource covers the crème de la crème of antiques and collectibles that would be found at high-end auction houses and dealers. Casual collectors looking for more highly sought-after pieces might be better served by Kim and Terry Kovel's Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide.—Julia A. Watson, Marywood Univ.
