Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
If you don't think that using a reference book when doing a crossword puzzle is cheating, then this "crossword" dictionary is for you. If you have doubts, then use this book only if you are stuck or just need a couple of answers to help you complete the puzzle, as New York Times crossword editor Will Shortz suggests in his introduction. Compiled by two crossword puzzle pros, the work is arranged alphabetically, with entries including 500,000-plus synonyms, 3000-plus books, 5000-plus films, 20,000-plus famous people, and over 100,000 "possible answers" or clues listed according to the number of letters in the word. If the clue is part of an expression, the dictionary gives possible words to start, finish, or complete it. You will find Nobel prize winners by category and year, Mel's Diner waitresses, Hall of Famers in baseball and basketball, Kim Basinger's films, 100 ways to say "good," and lots of current TV and pop culture items. The only minor inconsistency this reviewer was able to detect is that under the many possibilities for Ben, Stiller is missing, but he is listed under Stiller, along with his films and parents. Bottom Line Although well constructed, this reference book begs the question of how many patrons actually do crossword puzzles in libraries or visit their libraries to look up words for this reason. If the number at your library is significant, then consider purchasing this excellent resource.-Kitty Chen Dean, Nassau Community Coll., Garden City, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Million Word Crossword Dictionary by Stanley Newman, Daniel Stark (Paperback)

Thank you for this book. It was a gift for my mom.

The paper was of lighter weight but relatively thick pages. My 80 year old mom can at least lift it because of this.

The references were easy to figure out for me who has never used this type of book before.

Mom likes it....which is REALLY saying something!!!!
Trust me... She would have said she didn't like it if she didn't.

    THE Crossword Puzzle Dictionary

This is what I have found to be the best crossword puzzle dictionary. It costs a bit more, but you must be careful. It may give you too many answers if you prefer "working" your puzzles.

Best Crossword Puzzle Dictionary I've Come Across.

Very comprehensive, if a little difficult to read. They've packed alot of puzzle clues into this book. So far, I've encountered only a few clues for which I could not find answers, but that just increases the challenge, right?

After buying other puzzle dictionaries over the years, I must say this is the best one I have found. Have a good reading lamp nearby because the print is small with four columns per page.

I bought this as a gift for my crossword-puzzle working husband. He said it was the most inclusive crossword puzzle dictionary he's ever had. He liked it so well I encouraged my daughter-in-law to buy one as well. She did, and she likes it as much

    as my husband does.

Many words but gaps, good presentations

I was surprised that some clues were not answered, given how many words were in this huge volume. In several cases I did not find an answer here but did findit in the ABC crossword dictionary. I did like the way the answers were organized.

DO NOT BUY FOR YOUR NOOK

I wish I had read all of the reviews, as the reviews on the first page highly recommended this book. It is so slow that my Nook goes to sleep before it finds the word I typed into "search". Try to advance pages is even worse. This was a total waste of money. Can I return this book?

    IMPOSSIBLE!

Trying to find words is so frustrating because there is no search function. You spend all of your time trying to estimate where the word might be found.

    2nd edition is wonderful

We have purchased the first edition of this reference twice. When the second one was worn out, we couldn't find a copy in stores. I then went to B&N online and learned it had been updated. Useful changes were made from the first edition, and it remains our go-to resource for working cross-word puzzles.

Easy to use and covers the words well. I recommend this book. I purchased one before I found this and it was the worst ever so I really appreciate finding this book.

This book is the best crossword dictionary I have every purchase

This book is the best crossword dictionary I have every purchased.
I only wish it had not had a Paperback cover for this is quite a large and heavy volume. My volume has split  into two pieces.  I paid in
    $30 - $33 range when I purchased it.
In fact even with the cost of the Hardcover edition I wonder if that would stand up any better with continued usage.
This book  is almost the sole one I use  looking for answers.
Most  of what I had  before were very old editions (circa 1995,etc).
