Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Milo, his sister, Sam, and his scruffy dog, Wolf are always getting into trouble. As the story opens, the trio is suffering the repercussions of that morning's escapade. Wolf had escaped the yard and subsequently ate the neighbor's newspaper for the third time that week, resulting in all three being grounded. Unfortunately for Milo and Sam, Wolf chose the worst day of the year to misbehave—the fire engine parade was to take place later that afternoon. In a predictable climax, Wolf escaped from the yard again, wreaked havoc downtown, and ultimately caused the fire engine parade to detour past Milo's house. This story does nothing to help parents and teachers who are trying to teach children mannerly behavior. It contains several instances of negative behavior without punishment; in fact, Milo receives positive reinforcement for his poor behavior when the firemen deposit him on his front step after he and Wolf decimate the area around downtown. The prose is simplistic, the story unoriginal, and this book, in my opinion, is an overall poor choice for parents and teachers. 2002, MONDO Publishing,

Kirkus Reviews
With blithe disregard for credibility or consequences, Jane showers young Milo with treats and rewards after he wreaks destruction along a parade route after blowing off parental orders. Despite being grounded, Milo chases his dog through a conveniently open gate, then knocks over a line of pushcarts along the way. Having created enough wreckage to reroute the parade, he elbows a firefighter, who benevolently gives him a T-shirt, then gets to "drive" a fire engine past his house. Showing not a trace of remorse in Johnson's bland, smiley art, Milo returns home to mug at viewers while his sister makes a snide comment about how he missed everything. Even less discriminating readers will see a world of difference between David Shannon's engaging, eponymous ne'er-do-well and this sociopath. (Picture book. 6-7)
