Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
All Tallulah wanted for her birthday was a pink fluffy rabbit like those of her friends, but there do not seem to be any available. So her grandma tries to knit her one. Tallulah is distressed to find that the finished creature is Milo Armadillo. She tries to make the best of it. At first Tallulah finds Milo not quite as good as a rabbit. Milo tries to become more like a rabbit, with hilarious results, but in vain. He finally decides to go back and ask Grandma to unravel him. When Tallulah finds him missing, she realizes that she really wants him. She follows his loose thread to Grandma's. His tail fixed, Milo goes back home happily with Tallulah. The end pages are totally covered with knitted pink stitches while pink yarn rolls across some pages. Mixed media single and double-page scenes plus vignettes of the imaginative adventures depict with humor Tallulah's gradual appreciation of her eager new toy. Sketchy outlines and minimal detail are frequently surrounded by collage, adding visual interest to the heart-warming story. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz

K-Gr 2—Tallulah wants a pink fluffy rabbit for her birthday, and Grandma tries to make her one. In spite of the woman's best efforts, however, what comes off her knitting needles is not a rabbit but an armadillo named Milo. Though disappointed, Tallulah tries to make the best of her gift, but it isn't until she almost loses Milo that she realizes how dear he has become to her. Mixed-media collages pay homage to all things handmade by incorporating worked yarn and fabric into the illustrations. This candy-colored picture book tells a simple, sweet story about learning to love what you have.—Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA
Kirkus Reviews
Tallulah wants a pink fluffy rabbit, just like all her friends. But when one cannot be found, her grandmother knits up something in its place. Milo Armadillo, complete with a multicolored back and a pink knit tail, will have to do. As Tallulah and Milo get to know each other, the little girl cannot help comparing the armadillo unfavorably to a rabbit: "Rabbits jump higher." Milo really wants to make his little girl happy, so he tries getting a makeover and wearing a costume. Nothing works, and his sadness and sense of self-sacrifice are palpable. With a cheerful palette and a large font (often in a distinctive script), the illustrations are as charming as the characters. The mixed-media artwork includes photocollaged knitting, sequins and other fabrics, providing texture. Has Tallulah let her friendship with Milo unravel? Appreciating what you have is not a new story, yet Fearnley has knit together a sweet yarn of selfless love in the unlikely person of a sweet stuffed armadillo. (Picture book. 3-6)
