Overview

"I can't begin to say how fortunate I am. My baseball career has certainly been a dream for me. I have had the privilege not only of playing professionally, but also of broadcasting this great game. I'm sure it would please anyone to say that. But I feel fortunate because I was able to play and broadcast for my hometown Milwaukee. That's more than anyone could ask."

So begins Bob Uecker's introductory essay to Milwaukee: City by the Waters . During the 1960s, Uecker, a Milwaukee native, played baseball for the Milwaukee Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies. But he made a name for himself as the voice of today's Milwaukee Brewers, and his colorful personality and humorous play-by-play have fan favorites for some 30 years.

"To be born and raised in Milwaukee, to play baseball and to broadcast games here," Uecker exclaims, "what a thrill!" His Milwaukee is indeed a thrilling city. It brims with the near-constant activity, from Brewers games at the new Enron Field to the packed schedule of popular celebrations and gatherings-including Summerfest, the Wisconsin State Fair, and the great Circus Parade. Milwaukee's beautiful, historic buildings attract visitors from all over the country, while impressive facilities like the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, and Milwaukee Art Museum support the city's reputation as a center for culture and learning.

Aided by beautiful images culled from some of the area's finest photographers, Uecker notes that "Milwaukee is right up there with other major cities in the United States. The city recognizes its potential and resources. It has a big-city mentality with a small-town heart. The people make Milwaukee Genuine." In short, this city by the waters is "a great place on a great lake," Uecker concludes. "I feel fortunate indeed to call it my home."
