Harper's (Milo's Special Words) sweet if occasionally static tales introduce two ambiguous creatures whose mild sparring gives way to amicable truces. Mimi is the headstrong instigator of the duo, Lulu the problem solver. In the first story, Mimi, wearing a flouncy pink frock and boa, insists she only likes pink things, until Lulu, dressed head-to-toe in purple, offers to share her purple frosted cupcake. Lulu again makes peace when Mimi ignores her while allegedly chatting on the phone with another friend (“That's not even a real phone,” accuses Lulu) by craftily enticing Mimi with “a flying pink elephant ride.” In the book's flattest story, Lulu announces she must go home before they've had time to play princess, easing her friend's subsequent histrionics by lending Mimi her purple hair bow. As spare as the text, Harper's artwork sets these friends and minimal props against white backdrops, keeping attention on the characters and their changing emotional states. Deceptively simple, the stories reveal plenty about the tricky realities of early friendships and the rewards of compromise and generosity. Ages 3–6. (Sept.)

Meet Mimi in pink froufrou and Lulu in practical purple who are best friends in three little stories that chronicle the ups and downs of their friendship. In "Colors" Mimi extols the virtues of pink until Lulu proves that purple can taste delicious when she produces a purple frosted cupcake. In the second story, "Phone," Mimi seems set on provoking Lulu's jealousy by talking to her friend Sally on a pretend phone. Clever Lulu invents a flying pink elephant game to lure Mimi from the phone. The final selection, "Princess," finds Mimi awash with tears when Lulu has to go home and can no longer play princess. Lulu leaves her favorite bow as a sort of collateral when she promises to return the next day to finish the imaginary fun. Like all good buddies, Mimi and Lulu compliment and support one another although in this particular give and take Mimi seems to be more of the taker. But that is what makes this friendship authentic. Self-absorbed Mimi and Lulu with her flair for problem solving and compromise make a great team. The stories are simple and sweet and the words not too demanding for emerging readers. Lots of sugary purple and pink adorn the pages and are in stark contrast to the bright white background. Not a first purchase, but charming enough to help underscore the value of a true friend. A purple and pink friendship punctuates three short stories for young ones. Willems's Elephant and Piggie could invite pink-loving Mimi and Lulu, her friend who loves purple, for a play date. They would have a lot to share. Mimi and Lulu are good friends who struggle with the same issues youngsters everywhere face: when favorite colors collide, jealousy and what to do when your friend has to go home. Three stories, told mostly through dialogue, explore this friendship and how little disagreements can be solved with understanding and humor. Harper's sunny illustrations, in varying shades of purple and pink on a white background, have details that delight: hair bows, crowns, feather boas, cupcakes and a cheery pretend phone. Emotions are easily shown through the uplifted brows, squinting eyes and an occasionally open, screaming mouth. The frou-frou typeface adds to the overall girliness of this offering and will be embraced by those little girls who like their stories with fancy dashes. Easy to read, with lots of laughs and a few life lessons along the way. (Picture book. 3-6)
