If you rent/buy this book, don't expect to see a lot of statistical baseball analysis by Bill James. This is biography about Bill James and not his work. Quotes from his books are in the book but only in 50% of the book. Some pages will not be baseball related. However, at times it can be interesting especially if you have never read one of his books. But if you are looking for a lot of statistical info, you probably should go to the library before buying it.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. It is clear that the author knows Bill James, but instead of using that to his advantage, he relies on it like a crutch. At least 50% of the book is reprinting Bill James' work from other sources (although with no footnotes for reference). In between, the author throws together short, factual stories without any context or meaningful purpose. For example, the author notes that Sports Illustrated interviewed James for a story in 1981 but never ran the piece due to fact checking issues with some of his statistics. James claims the Elias Bureau would not give him the official statistics. That's it - there's no conclusion, no context. The reader is left to wonder: Was this a huge deal that SI would interview James so early in his career? Was James crushed by the story being canceled? Did SI ever run a story about him? If so, when? Did Elias ever allow James access to the official statistics? If so, when and why? There are multiple examples of factual stories without a point. The organization is also very poor. The author must have assumed that anyone picking up this book would have read every issue of James' Baseball Abstract, because he fails to describe James' key work with any detail. I have never seen one, and after reading the book, I cannot tell you what would be included in one. This makes me wonder how Doubleday could have greenlighted this for printing. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
