Overview

"The road in life forks in every moment, with one path leading toward confusion, separateness, and entanglement, and the other toward clarity, connection, and mental freedom. With mind whispering, the choice can be ours."

Why sometimes do even the smallest events send us into a downward spiral? Whether we're aware of it or not, our feelings and outlook are constantly shaped by learned patterns, or habitual modes of being. These have the power to dictate our sense of wellbeing and our very perceptions of our lives and the world around us. These modes—distinct orchestrations of how we think and feel, how we act and interact—can open us up to delight and wisdom or preoccupy us with fear and despair, driving and distorting our experiences like invisible puppeteers of the mind.

In this engaging and insightful work, New York Times bestselling author Tara Bennett-Goleman offers us new ways to cut the strings of our self-defeating habits and find emotional freedom.

By bringing together the latest in cognitive psychology, the neuroscience of habit change, Eastern philosophy, and her experience with horse whispering, Bennett-Goleman helps liberate us from our most challenging mental roadblocks so we can identify emotional triggers and dysfunctional habits in ourselves and our relationships and begin to build new positive patterns in our lives and our world.

A groundbreaking map of the emotional mind, Mind Whispering helps transform our emotions, improve our relationships, connect us with a wise and compassionate heart, and finally live with a more lasting sense of happiness.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Blending cognitive psychology, Eastern philosophy, neuroscience, and lessons from the animal kingdom, psychotherapist Bennett-Goleman (Emotional Alchemy) outlines the destructive thought patterns that beget emotional instability, and offers solutions for changing them. After defining the most common negative core beliefs—e.g., subjugation, or the sense that “my wishes and feelings don’t count”; unlovability, the belief that one is essentially defective; and fear of abandonment—the author teaches readers to pinpoint their triggers, recognize damaging mental habits, counteract knee-jerk reactions, decide upon a healthier response, and assert oneself in a productive way. “Sometimes a perspective shift is all it takes to change your reaction,” she opines. As is the case with most self-help books of this sort, that’s easier said than done. But Bennett-Goleman is nevertheless a clear and capable guide. In addition to her treatment of the individual, she also turns a lens on the world at large, advising readers on how to apply these principles to intimate relationships as well as everyday encounters with coworkers, friends, and strangers, and provides suggestions for how to feel empathy for others struggling with their own self-defeating behaviors. A thought-provoking and practical way to reassess one’s emotional life. Agent: Linda Loewenthal, David Black Agency. (May)

“Bennett-Goleman has written a book of exquisite sensitivity and wisdom, in which she invites us to cultivate a healing relationship to the deepest aspects of ourselves and the world, through ‘mind whispering’. Brilliantly synthesising the ancient wisdom of Asia, with modern psychology, she offers a lasting source of nourishment.”
Joseph Goldstein
“In weaving together so many different strands of wisdom and compassionate response, Mind Whispering creates a striking and inspiring tapestry of engaged understanding. Tara Bennett-Goleman draws on an amazingly rich and varied life and in so doing illuminates our path of love and freedom.”
Library Journal
Psychotherapist Bennett-Goleman (The Horse Whisperer, LJ 7/95) synthesizes a variety of disciplines, such as Buddhism, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience, to describe her method of changing negative habits into healthy ones. As one might expect, she draws parallels to working with horses and recommends being aware of one's environment. In order to overcome unhealthy habits, the author advocates mindfulness, loving kindness, and meditation. VERDICT Will appeal to devotees of Eastern philosophy.

    Not that great.

I was disappointed in this book. I thougth it would help me out but it didn't. A lot of talk about horses. It just went on and on that I got so bored I started skipping through pages. No where did it help the reader deal with their own self defeating habits like it says on the cover of the book.

This is book is wonderful! A refreshing, engaging and very helpful approach to understanding one's mind and emotions in so many contexts. I found Bennett-Goleman's use of the metaphor of horse whispering to be brilliant, inspiring AND accessible-- a unique approach to how we can find more ease in both our inner lives and in our connection with others through the kind of mindful collaboration used in horse-whispering. Elegant, clear prose and great anecdotes! I highly recommend this beautiful book-- it's a unique gem that shouldn't be missed!
