After both his parents die, Rob feels completely out of sorts. Things aren't going quite the way he had imagined them. After a fight with his wife Beth, she leaves him. Rob is suddenly left with the task of trying to make sense of the what remains of his life. He decides to take a journey he had always dreamed of taking to find the source of a river he grew up near. This journey takes him to some beautiful places, and allows him to meet some wonderful people. It also allows him to think about his life, his belief, and his faith. These things can change his life into something entirely different from what it was before, if only he will let it.

This was an interesting book on a couple levels. First, there is the story itself. The idea of taking this journey he had always wanted to take was very interesting. In some ways you could taste the freedom Rob suddenly enjoyed. This book moves at a slow pace, very much resembling the slower pace Rob was experiencing traveling down the river. It's full of interesting characters as well. The people Rob meets on his way have wonderful ways of seeing the world, and they very much shape Rob's evolving world views.

The most interesting part of this book to me was the fight between Rob's intellect and his evolving world views. The main idea of this book is that a man can find God during his journeys though life. Rob was someone who relied heavily on the philosophies of so many of the great thinkers throughout history. This took him away from the basic religious beliefs he had once held though. While traveling, Rob was really forced to reevaluate all the things he held to be true. This is an interesting journey that many people will relate to. For me, I wish the book had moved a tiny bit faster, but I think this is something a lot of other people will appreciate. Overall, this book will leave you with many things to ponder in your life as well.

Hollis Hughes in his new book “Mindful of Him” published by WinePress Publishing takes us into the life of Rob McLain.

From the back cover: Mindful of Him is a tale of heartbreak and triumph set in the 1950s. Separated from his young wife, and with both of his parents recently deceased, Rob McLain sets off on an adventure for which he has longed since childhood.
Travel with Rob as his journey not only takes him to beautiful places, but also crosses his path with influential men who help him through his loneliness. Five months into the trip, Rob has a moonlight encounter that changes his life forever and overwhelmingly convinces this young skeptic that God is indeed mindful of him!
Through it all, he receives answers to life’s deepest questions. What does he learn? What happens to his wife? Do they get back together? Does he make it back safely?
Find the answers to these questions and others dealing with faith, creation, nature, and more in Mindful of Him, which will keep you reading long after you had planned to turn out the lights.

Rob McLain has had a series of emotional trials and traumas and he really doesn’t know how to deal with it so he decides to give up school and his job and go on a six month canoe trip up the Canoba River. When I want to get alone with God and just have some Him and me time I go for a walk along the wooded paths by my house. This is not really Rob’s intention as he sets off on his canoe journey but this is what it becomes. Along his journey Rob meets a few men who present different ideas to him that cause him to reflect more and more on God. As Rob’s mind is more aware of God he becomes aware that God is always mindful of him. ”Mindful of Him” is about faith, healing, hope and restoration. I liked it a lot.

    Highly recommend

Enjoyed reading this book very much and feel it would be a wonderful resource for book club discussions. The author's knowledge of the subject matter is outstanding. I feel I traveled this five month journey with Rob and felt the emotions he experienced. This book is thought provoking and difficult to put down but well worth the loss of sleep you could experience while reading. Great movie material and I would enjoy reading other writings by this author.

Highly Recommended - you must check it out!

I loved this book! The author seems to be very knowledgeable in so may areas. I was hooked by this most unusual, yet completely believable story early on. The characters so captivated me, that by the end of the book, I felt as though I, too, had met them and experienced this five-month journey along with Rob. I think it would make a great movie. I give it five stars and I'll read it again. I loved the book so much that I gave several books as Christmas presents. Can't wait for the next novel by this author. James Vail
