Description: This introduction to the use of mindfulness practice as a treatment for depression provides a step-by-step guide to how to first experience mindfulness practices and how to integrate the practice when working with clients. The book contains over 40 reproducible handouts as well access to additional tools, including downloadable audio recordings, on a companion website.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce clinicians to mindfulness-based guided meditation as an accompaniment to cognitive therapy for treating patients with depression. Now in its second edition, this book provides insights into the lessons learned that resulted from the introduction of mindfulness meditation as a treatment for recurring cognitive depression. The authors revisit the established treatment for cognitive depression, recount how they came to believe that mindfulness-based meditation was an approach worth considering, and provide updates to the theories and research that continue to motivate clinicians to consider this approach. In doing so, they have provided a detailed journey through their eight-session MBCT program, as well as recommendations, guidelines, and next steps for clinicians interested in incorporating MBCT into their practice. The authors share new research into its effectiveness as well as clinical teaching about implementation.
Audience: Mental health professionals who are treating patients for depression are the intended audience — psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatrists, and counselors. Graduate students and professionals interested in the theory and application of mindful meditation will also benefit.

Meet the Author


Zindel V. Segal, PhD, is Distinguished Professor of Psychology in Mood Disorders at the University of Toronto-Scarborough. He is also the Director of Clinical Training in the Psychology Department’s Graduate Program in Psychological Clinical Science. He is a founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and advocates for the relevance of mindfulness-based clinical care in psychiatry and mental health.

J. Mark G. Williams, DPhil, is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Wellcome Principal Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. He also is Director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre in the University of Oxford's Department of Psychiatry. He is a founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Academy, and the Association for Psychological Science.

John D. Teasdale, PhD, held a Special Scientific Appointment with the United Kingdom Medical Research Council's Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, England. Dr. Teasdale is a founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academy of Medical Sciences. He also is a recipient of the Distinguished Scientist Award from Division 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. Since retiring, Dr. Teasdale has taught insight meditation internationally.
