    Mindfulness in Plain English

    The reading of "Mindfulness in Plain English" was very interesting. It was filled with lots of definitions and terminology, but I really liked that it was "written for those who actually want to meditate, and especially for those who want to start now." I feel that I fit in this category. It was nice to find out what kind of meditation we will be practicing also, Vipassana, as the book says, "can be translated as "insight," a clear awareness of exactly what is happening as it happens." In chapter one the second paragraph pages 7- 9 there is such a great starter to meditation that I will have to try to use this with my incarcerated veterans. I think it will help them understand that it is ok to feel and be going through things and help me guild them to making those changes in their lives. I really liked that the book does emphasize, "the essence of our experience is change." It also stated that, "what we are really after is the feeling of relief that comes when the drive is satisfied, relief, relaxation, and an end to the tension. Peace, happiness-no more yearning." I think that many of use too are looking for happiness! I also liked that the book clearify's what meditation is: "is intended to purify the mind", "is called the Great Teacher", and "is a lot like cultivating a new land". It also said that "the purpose of meditation is personal transformation", and that "meditation sharpens your concentration and your thinking power. I know I could use some help in that area. I really liked chapter two and it's way of going through and answering misconceptions about meditation. I did find it interesting that the "three integral factors in Buddhist meditation-morality, concentration, and wisdom." And that the book even broke down morality even farther into levels of: adherence, obeying the same rules, and ethics. I think that I most liked this definition of Vipassana, which "is a practice done with the specific intention of facing reality, to fully experience life just as it is and to cope with exactly what you find. It allows you to blow aside the illusions and free yourself from all the polite little lies you tell yourself all the time." I think we are all guilty of this! In chapter 4 I really liked the list of attitudes that are essential to our success in practice of meditation: 1) Don't expect anything, 2) Don't strain, 3) Don't rush, 4) Don't cling to anything, and don't reject anything, 5) Let go, 6) Accept everthing that arises, 7) Be gentle with yourself, 8) Investigate yourself, 9) View all problems as challenges, 10) Don't ponder, 11) Don't dwell upon contrasts, and 12) Breathing. I think this list makes it so much easier to remember and is useable. This might make it easier for my clients to follow also! In Chapter five I liked the way it starts going through when we are mindful and the metal factors that we will experience. I also liked the tools that the chapter provided for use when our minds start to wander and we need help with concentration. I have tried the counting and I find it very difficult, but I will try again. Chapter six really brought together for me some general rules such as posture. I know in the past that I have had lots of difficulties with this. I felt that the book was a pretty easy read, and that the author did keep things in plain English. It is definitely something that I will use in the future, not only for myself but also with my clients.

    Focus on technique without the mysticism

    Most meditation books focus on the religious aspects, and are directed at readers who are interested in or are accepting of the Buddha-babble. This book focuses on learning a valuable technique for focusing the mind.

    Simple Lifelong Knowledge

    The book is a easy ready with basic fundamentals of meditating. It was very personal and all encompassing at the same time. I am a beginner at meditation but this book provides ideas and tools that you can develop yourself over a life time. I recommend this book for anyone that is interested in meditation or becoming more self-aware of yourself. VERY EXCELLENT!!!

    The best guide to meditation I have read so far

    This book is a must read. I have read a few books on meditation, some very good that helped me establish a good practice. However, this book stands out. The explanations are clear and profound. Highly recommended.

    Destined to be a classic.

    I love this book. I have never read a clearer explanation of what mindfulness is, why it¿s worth doing, and how exactly to do it. I've read many books about meditation and Buddhism, and if I had to get rid of all of them but one, this is the book I would keep. Mindfulness in Plain English has it all. I don't mean to gush like this, but I really can't say enough about it. It is a fantastic achievement. If you've ever been confused by meditation or if you've ever wanted to know how to practice mindfulness, this is the book for you. He goes step by step, including two good chapters on how to deal with the zillions of distractions your mind comes up with, and a chapter with several meditations you can practice in everyday life to help you bring mindfulness into your regular activities. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, so I've specialized in separating what really works from what merely sounds good, and Mindfulness in Plain English is solidly in the 'what works' category. I can't recommend it enough. By the way, this book has been translated into several other languages, which I thought was kind of funny.

    'naked plain truth'

    The author tells us his book is without frills - the most practical 'naked plain truth' there is. Mindfulness in Plain English certainly sounds like a hands-on guide for those who are learning to meditate all by themselves. It is. Explaining Buddhism for the beginner and Vipassana meditation as the ancient technique for living the psychology of Buddhism is how this book begins. Then the author ( Venerable Henepola Gunaratana - a Sri Lankan monk and international teacher) gets right to work. The table of contents contains chapters like 'What Meditation Isn't', and 'What Meditation Is'. It starts with 'The Practice' and includes 'What to Do With Your Mind', and finally ends up with the obvious 'What's in it for You'. Gunaratana knows what beginners want and delivers it. Now all you have to do is practice.
