Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
With the publication of the picture book, Mine! Mine! Mine!, Sterling Publishing introduces an incredibly talented writer, Shelly Becker, to the world of children's picture books. In this humorous story, Cousin Clare come to visit, which means Gail has to share her toys. At first Gail says, "All these toys are mine. Find something else to play." In a classic example of childhood, Gail cries out, "MINE! MINE! MINE! You give it back!" when Cousin Gail sits down with a favorite teddy bear. At the end of the book, Gail has learned about sharing. Parents who are trying to teach their children to share will find this book amazingly funny and helpful. As a parent of four children, Shelly Becker brings expert knowledge, along with a great sense of humor, to a universal problem. The book will enchant young readers and their parents for many years to come, and is destined to become a modern classic.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-Gail refuses to share her toys when her cousin Claire comes to play, prompting her mother to admonish her to be nice and find something her guest would enjoy. But Gail erupts in fury and claims all her possessions for herself. Finally, with a smug look, she digs out some cast-off stuff from the attic and presents it to her disappointed cousin. Her mother gently explains that she must share her favorite things, not throwaways, but Gail, who is not ready for that, promises to think about it another day. The story, told in rhyme, is illustrated in brightly colored acrylics that depict the possessive preschooler and her dejected visitor. But the mother is far too mild and ineffective in light of her daughter's obnoxious behavior, and the child is depicted as a sweet little girl. This story, although attempting to show a typical situation, conveys a negative message.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    This is a great book!

This book is a terrific tale about sharing. I bought this book a few months ago for my now 3 year old and she loves it! Whenever we have issues where she doesn't want to share her toys, I use Gayle as an example and ask her if she wants to not share like Gayle. It is a great book to teach kids about sharing.

    Meaning of Mine Mine Mine

Mrs. Becker's first children's book is a positive and sophisticated part of children's lit. Notice that Gail, the obnoxious character follows her mother's advice to share--but only according to the 'letter' of the law. Sure, used bubble gum and other sundry discarded items are easy to share. But the good stuff? Not so fast, says Gail. Ah, but her mother is wise--she recognizes that human interaction is based on the 'spirit' of the law--sharing the coveted stuff and sharing it quickly. So Gail learns this important significant lesson in social mores. Also, the mother's 'modelling' lessons is important in Becker's wonderful book--I even used it myself yesterday when my older child was unwilling to share her favourite purse--I said, 'I share my cake, by bedtime stories, my hats' and you can share your FAVOURITE things too--not a bad lesson for a 7 year old. I look forward to more quirky, yet down-to-earth lit. from Shelly Becker. Bravo!

    A Parent's Response and Review

In a world where almost every turn of the radio and tv dial exposes a child to anger and violence, this book is a welcome and much-needed safe haven for our children. The SLJ review complains that Gail's mother is overly mild in directing her child in the ways of proper behavior. The reviewer would have liked to see Gail's mother impatiently yelling at her daughter, perhaps accompanied by a smack on the rear. In today's world however, a child needs their parent to be a source of warmth and love. 'Be firm, yet gentle' is the motto of today's parents. Gail's mother demonstrates this beautifully. Gail, along with any child reading her book, recognizes that her mother's admonitions do not stem from selfishness and impatience, rather from love and concern. The book leaves any child with a feeling that a parent is someone that cares for and loves them. Mild admonitions, given gently and firmly, are the ones that our children will thank us for when they grow older. Perhaps the SLJ reviewer has a different method of parenting that she would like to share with us. For the rest of us however, Mine!Mine!Mine! carries an important message for parents as well as children. Indeed, as my children will tell you, this wonderful book not only conveys a positive message to our family, it has a positive EFFECT as well.
