Overview

Minerva Clark has never liked popular, bratty Chelsea de Guzman. But when Chelsea pleads with Minerva to help her locate a missing diamond, the prospect of a new mystery is just too irresistible to pass up, especially after Minerva learns that it's a red diamond and potentially worth millions. Before long Minerva is doing what she does best: getting into trouble while getting to the bottom of things. Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It's summer and Minerva's oldest brother, Mark, enrolls her in a basic electronics class, even though there's plenty of other activities to keep her occupied. Chelsea De Guzman, one of her well-to-do classmates, has lost a rare, red diamond ring that her jeweler father was smuggling home from London. When a distraught Chelsea begs her to find the ring, Minerva sets out on a humorous yet risky search with her cell phone, her bike, and the reliable light rail system of Portland, Oregon, as her primary detecting tools. She meets an intriguing cast of characters (including those on a movie set), all with high stakes in the ring, and in stopping her from discovering it origin and its true value to the various would-be-owners. At the same time, Minerva's long-term friendship with Reggie, the boy down the street, is off-track, and though Minerva has changed dramatically since her mother left home, she worries that her new self won't been seen and accepted. How Minerva handles these challenges and manages to sustain her newfound confidence is relayed through a fast-paced plot, animated characters, and witty dialogue. As the second book in the new "Minerva Clark Mystery" series, this one stands alone and is a great read. Yet, allusions to events in Minerva Clark Gets a Clue, the first series title, will likely entice new fans to learn how a lightning storm resulted in Minerva's supreme self-confidence, led to her new role as kid-detective, and why she and her brothers are on their own.
Kirkus Reviews
Her dad is always out of town on business, and her mother left with her boyfriend to teach yoga in Santa Fe, so Minerva is being raised by her three older brothers. A self-reliant expert on figuring things out, she is, in fact, a mystery solver. In the second of a projected series, a classmate of Minerva's calls for help in finding a rare red diamond stolen from her ring. Corgi dogs, homing pigeons, an electronics class, Catholic school, kidnapping and a movie set aid and abet the tangled plot. Lots of IMing, cell phones and contemporary props keep the story current. References to actions in Minerva Gets a Clue (2005) fill in bits of background, but this title can stand on its own. Unfortunately, while the cover photo of a cute Corgi is appealing, it also may lead readers to think that the dog is Minerva. But this fairly typical teenager will take her place next to Nancy Drew as a prime crime case-cracker. (Fiction. 10-14)

    Wow... Minerva is amazing...!

Wow. I didnt even choose this book. My sister chose it for me because her school was having a book fair. She chose this because it had a Pembroke Welsh Corgi on it. She knows how much i love dogs and how much i know about them so she got it. I started reading it and found it very addicting and more interesting than the cover looks. You know that quote "dont judge a book by its cover"? Yeah well this book is good for that quote because if you think youre going to get a boring book thats about puppies (which to me if its about puppies it is NOT boring) then u better think again. This book is so full of mystery, and suspense, it just got me stuck to it the whole time i was reading. You should definetly read this book.

    Thumbs Up for Minerva!

My favorite thing about Minerva Clark Goes to the Dogs, by Karen Karbo, is that an average eighth grader ¿or as average as a crime-obsessed person can be, anyway- is able to locate a multi-million dollar diamond when none of the authorities can. To me, this girl is incredible! When she gets a call from Chelsea, her classmate, about her missing ring, Minerva jumps right into the situation, asking questions and trying to put together the whole story at once. Although she is shocked that this time her case would involve tracking a rare gem, she doesn¿t back down and forget about it instead, she becomes even more intent on finding it than before! I admire the spunk and curiosity that Minerva receives after a near-electrocution experience in her past- especially her ability to focus on more than just clothes and boys! Because Minerva is my age, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I therefore recommend this book to any middle schooler in search of a book that¿s tough to put down.

This book was okay. The mystery was good. I wished they would talk a little bit more about Kevin though.
