Children's Literature - Chelsea Couillard-Smith
Young pet lovers with an interest in horses will enjoy this installment in the "Far-Out and Unusual Pets" series. Beginning with the history of miniature horses and an overview of their roles in various world cultures, readers learn basic facts about these small creatures. The authors discuss the varied characteristics of miniature horses, their specialized needs as pets, and the many important considerations for those looking to adopt a miniature horse. Young readers also learn more general tips for horse care such as the importance of grooming and exercise, an introduction to behavior training and a horse's unique dietary needs. The emphasis throughout is on responsible pet ownership and the feasibility of keeping a miniature horse as a pet, even in living situations that would normally not support a pony or full-sized horse. An abundance of large color photographs illustrate the variety in horse size and coloring, and effectively support the text. However, the addition of digital illustrations depicting cartoon horses engaged in human-like activities does little to support the factual information and feels out of place next to the realism of the photographs. Colorful text boxes highlight a variety of additional relevant topics such as the difference between miniature horses and ponies, and the need to always provide an animal a companion to keep them company. Lots of white space, brightly colored borders and headings, and a conversational tone make this an accessible and inviting option for reluctant readers. At the same time, the comprehensive information presented will be useful for those writing reports. Overall, the inexplicable addition of distracting cartoon drawings doesn't diminish the quality of the information presented. For public and school libraries seeking titles on the unusual animals in which students are invariably interested, this is an adequate addition to the collection. Includes vocabulary list, additional resources, and an index. Reviewer: Chelsea Couillard-Smith
