Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
If you have a small child who can't keep his or her hands off creepy crawlies, this is the book. All kinds of bugs and insects are presented in close-up photographs or bright, realistic drawings with brief, large-print accompanying descriptions. The nice thing about the dialogue is that the few words that are included give the kind of facts a child would find interesting. For instance, it presents what a particular insect eats for dinner or how a bug catches its dinner, protects itself from predators or builds its home. While this may sound like an information packed science book, it is in fact simple, and provides the bulk of information through the excellent photos and illustrations. At the end of the book there is a "Can You Find?" and a "Do You Know?" section that presents an easy review of the content and an opportunity for further discussion. This book would well serve as a beginning reference book in a school library or even on that bug lover's bedroom bookshelf. 2000, Aladdin, $17.90. Ages 6 to 9. Reviewer: Kathleen Orosz
