Description: Once regarded as an inappropriate surgical technique for the foot and ankle, minimally invasive surgery is seeing a healthy resurgence now, largely due to innovations in instrumentation and a broader acceptance by the surgical community at large. Part of the Minimally Invasive Orthopaedic Surgery series, this book includes access to an online version.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe minimally invasive techniques for a broad spectrum of foot and ankle disorders. Having an online version is valuable from an accessibility standpoint, and it appears that the online version is identical to the print version.
Audience: The editors describe the audience as orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons, and include fellows, residents, and allied health providers as well, although who the latter are supposed to be they do not state. This book should be required reading for any foot and ankle surgeon, orthopedic, podiatric, or other specialty. It most certainly meets the needs of this audience, many of whom will be at least familiar with some of the techniques. The authors are all experienced orthopedic surgeons and many have specific expertise in the area of minimal incision surgery.
Features: The book is divided into six sections that cover a broad range of foot and ankle surgeries, both elective and traumatic in nature, amenable to minimally invasive techniques. It is well formatted, addressing each area with an introduction, indications, instrumentation setup, technique, postoperative management, and complications. Two particularly nice features are an outcomes section in each chapter that surveys the most current literature at the time of publication and a rehabilitation protocol section, which is more accurately a postoperative management course than physical rehabilitation management. However, it is refreshing to see a well-rounded approach to each condition.
Assessment: This is an excellent and extremely worthwhile addition to a foot and ankle surgeon's library. The book is well written, with first-rate illustrations and the print quality is excellent. The online version is required since so many of the audience will expect that capability, particularly residents and fellows. This should be required reading for all involved in the practice of foot and ankle surgery. Recommended highly.
