Description: This is the first of a new series of technically-based books on minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery. The book covers minimally invasive operative treatment of specific fractures of the upper and lower extremities, clavicle, pelvis, and acetabulum in the adult.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to cover technical aspects of minimally invasive operative treatment of specific fractures of the upper and lower extremities, clavicle, pelvis, and acetabulum in the adult. The aim of minimally invasive orthopaedic trauma surgery is to obtain osteosynthesis with minimal disturbance to the biology of the fracture, without violating the principles of fracture fixation or compromising the quality of the surgery. The authors successfully meet this objective.
Audience: The audience for this book would include all interested in minimally-invasive orthopaedic trauma surgery. This book is particularly germane to those less experienced in this area, often citing helpful hints to include patient positioning and fluoroscopy set-up.
Features: The book covers a wide range of fractures that would be treated by an orthopaedic generalist as well as several fracture types that would most often be treated by an orthopaedic trauma subspecialist. The chapters are concisely written and standardized to include sections on indications, patient positioning, surgical approach, surgical technique, complications, postoperative care and rehabilitation, and outcomes. The illustrations and intraoperative photos are very helpful and the x-ray reproductions are pertinent and easy to visualize. In addition, two interesting chapters on the historical perspective of nonoperative and operative fracture management and the biologic basis of minimally invasive osteosynthesis are also included.
Assessment: While other recent books have successfully addressed modern technical aspects of fracture fixation, this book is unique in its primary purpose of concentrating only on minimally invasive techniques. As a result, it includes chapters on less commonly utilized fracture fixation techniques such as forearm and midclavicular fracture nailing that many other books do not cover.
