Editorial Reviews

Booknews
This four-volume set collects reprinted articles that depict the story of the development of the British coal industry from its early industrialization to today, when the industry is of only minor significance to the well-being of the economy. Volume I covers the influence of the coal industry in the early industrialization of the British economy and its rise to being the premier industrial nation prior to 1870. Volume II considers the late 19th century when, despite the rapid growth of output, some concerns began to be expressed about the large scale of coal exports, falling labor productivity, and rising coal prices. Volume III focuses on the effects of increased competition, reduced markets, and attempts of the state to aid the industry. Volume IV considers the reasons for the change from early optimism under public sector control to the virtual demise of the industry. No index. Distributed by St. Martin's Press. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
