Minnie and Moo and the Thanksgiving Tree

Overview

Udderly hilarious!

Minnie and Moo are back in two new tales, the latest in the series that the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books called "the cream of the beginning-reader crop." In Minnie and Moo and the Thanksgiving Tree, Minnie and Moo vow to protect their two turkey friends, Zeke and Zack, from the farmer and his wife on the season's high-risk holiday. Zeke and Zack, however, have a few friends of their own...relatives, thirty-six...

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It's Thanksgiving and all of the animals ask Minnie and Moo, two thoughtful but philosophical cows, to save them from becoming dinner. First it's the Beakerson brothers, turkeys who ask to be hidden in the sky on the moon and the cows oblige by helping them (and thirty-six others) to roost in a tree. On chapter 3 they hide chickens, while chapters 4 and 5 escalate into hiding ostriches and some Holstein cows in this same tree. Coincidentally, the farmer and his wife plus visiting relatives plop down under this very tree to have a picnic of tofu loaf ("mashed bean crud" says the farmer"). The tree empties on a bee threat and the two cow friends are left to contemplate fall, melancholy, and the fact that they have each other--and there's always the hope of cream puffs. The humor is above the implied reader of these stories but young readers will respond to the ludicrous situations and Cazet's pencil and watercolor illustrations look friendly, gentle, and cheerful--a perfect match for Minnie and Moo. Part of the "Minnie and Moo" series. 2000, DK Publishing, Ages 5 to 8, $12.95 and $3.95. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
School Library Journal
Gr 1-2-Minnie and Moo, those cream-puff eating cows, are back with another misadventure. The turkeys are nervous on Thanksgiving morning, and the cows send them to hide in a tall oak tree. Next, the chickens worry about what will happen if the farmer can't find the turkeys, and so on and on until all of the farm's livestock are hiding among its branches. The animals needn't worry, though, for Mrs. Farmer has prepared a tofu loaf in the shape of a turkey, and the family and their guests settle down for a Thanksgiving picnic beneath this tree. Newly independent readers will appreciate the large print, four or five sentences per page, and four-page "chapters." As in Cazet's earlier titles about this bovine pair, silliness reigns supreme in the illustrations and in the far-fetched plot.-Sharon R.
