Overview

Getting there is half the fun with this pair, and along the way (past an electrical tower they think is the Eiffel), Minnie and Moo pick up a busload of equally adventurous animal friends from nearby Africa World, careen through a car wash they believe is China, and find themselves trading stories under a night sky in what they hope is America. The power and appeal of story itself has rarely been funnier -- or sweeter -- than in this slapstick extravaganza.

Two cow friends, Minnie and Moo, find a bus and try to drive to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
"A rolling cow gathers no moss" sets the tone for a wish fulfillment journey by two cow friends. Leafing through a magazine with Minnie, Moo thinks of Paris in the spring. An empty bus bearing the sign, "Got a place to go? Get on this bus" is Moo's invitation to get them on board for an intercontinental journey. They find Africa in an African theme park, which supplies friends also eager for new experiences. An oil derrick becomes the Eiffel tower, but Paris disappears and China Wong's Car Wash becomes their trip to China. By Minnie's requisite five o'clock milking, Moo has squeezed the bus into their farmer's garage, hidden their new friends in the barn, and Minnie had met her milking date. Night falls with the group enjoying a storytelling and marshmallow roast on a moon-lit hilltop. Cazet's story includes puns and enough sense for adult read alouders.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-This read-along by Denys Cazet (DK, 2001) features two cows whose misperceptions of reality are used to create broad, slapstick humor for young readers. This time Minnie and Moo take off in a bus for what they think is a world tour, but is really just a jaunt around their neighborhood. They see Africa (a wildlife park), Paris (an electric power tower), and China, (a car wash). Narrator Barbara Caruso attempts to use different voices for the animal and human characters, but is sometimes inconsistent in her intonations and accents. Sound effects of the bus engine, animals in the African park, and other background noises are used. Young readers who are not familiar with the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Nile may not understand the forced humor of the story plot. The book is a beginning reader, and the short, choppy sentences don't lend themselves to a smooth oral presentation.-Diane Balodis, Alden Intermediate School, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
