Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Coben Play Dead adroitly applies the fundamental rules of thrillerdom offer a raft of potential villains; keep the action moving at breakneck speed in this highly entertaining novel about a conspiracy apparently designed to prevent the development of a cure for AIDS. When one of a trio of research scientists on the brink of coming up with an AIDS antidote dies, it looks like suicide, but TV journalist Sara Lowell and her husband, NBA star Michael Silverman, who are friends of the clinic's founder, think otherwise. Their suspicions are confirmed when several clinic patients, including the son of a U.S. senator, are murdered. A televangelist with his own agenda, Sara's prominent physician father, and a high-ranking government official all seem intent upon derailing the AIDS research, a situation that becomes most personal when Michael is diagnosed with the disease. Police lieutenant ``Twitch'' Bernstein, a closet homosexual, ultimately comes face-to-face with the person responsible for the killings. The final revelation of the identity of the master conspirator comes as a real surprise. This page-turner also raises some interesting questions about medical research and its funding. Oct.
Library Journal
Coben is the author of one previous novel, Play Dead LJ 4/1/90. His new effort is an uneasy stew of contemporary American types: beautiful good girl who is a TV news celebrity; her sister, beautiful bad girl with a heart of gold; handsome basketball star stricken with AIDS; selfless doctor who may have discovered that disease's cure; totally evil contract killer; and hypocritical TV evangelist. These types and others are stirred into a pretty unbelievable story that ranges from New York City to Washington, D.C. to Bang kok and amasses an impressive body count. Despite such drawbacks, Coben keeps the reader's interest by fleshing out the stereotypes a little bit and moving the plot fast enough to overcome the more incredible aspects. A marginal purchase for public libraries.-- A.J. Wright, Univ. of Alabama, Birmingham
School Library Journal
YA-- Coben casts a dynamic, beautiful, and successful woman, Sara Lowell, and her handsome and famous sports figure, Michael Silverman, as his main characters. Their friend, Dr. Harvey Riker, takes them into his confidence when he tells them that his medical clinic has discovered a cure for AIDS. To his horror, his cured patients are being murdered by a serial killer dubbed the Gay Slasher by the media. Sara's father is in stiff competition with Riker for funding of his cancer clinic and her sister, Cassandra, is romantically involved with the doctor. When Michael collapses on the basketball court and is diagnosed as HIV positive, tracking down the murderer and supporting Riker's clinic take on new dimensions for Sara. This is a fast moving mystery that's sure to capture YAs' attention, especially in light of today's headlines.-- Katherine Fitch, Lake Braddock Secondary School, Burke, VA

Meet the Author

Harlan Coben

Harlan Coben is the bestselling author of eighteen novels, including The Woods, Promise Me, and The Innocent, and is the winner of the Edgar, Shamus, and Anthony awards. He lives in New Jersey with his family.

Biography

Harlan Coben may be the only mystery writer to have inspired the dubious endorsement, "Raymond Chandler meets Bridget Jones" (as the Chicago Tribune wrote about Darkest Fear). But it's not hard to see what the critic means: Coben knows how to create a good chase, but he is also adept at generating laughs along the way. His books often start with a few pieces of bad news and end with the closet door flung open to reveal a few skeletons.

Debuting in 1995, the series that cemented Coben's reputation revolves around Myron Bolitar, a wisecracking sports agent who always finds himself getting into trouble, via his clients or his own past. What's endearing about these books is Coben's willingness to have fun as he spins a story. He might poke fun the yuppie wardrobe of Bolitar's partner, Win, or his gal Friday (and sometime female wrestler), Big Cyndi's, tendency to wear "more makeup than the cast of Cats." There's a slight boys' club air to the series, but it's more frat house than locker room -- or more appropriately, rec room, since Bolitar finds himself still living at his parents' in his early 30s.

Sports-averse readers should not avoid the Bolitar books; in the end, sports play only a peripheral role in the story, which is primarily about the mystery. Given this, it's not surprising that Coben has called William Goldman's Marathon Man one of his favorite thrillers and has cited Philip Roth and Alfred Hitchcock as influences.

And yes, there's certainly life beyond Bolitar! Coben has crafted a number of superb stand-alone thrillers filled with tortuous twists and turns and peopled with characters you can't help but root for. In a 2001 interview, the author stated, "I love a book that sneaks up behind you at the end and slaps you in the back of the head." Ultimately, that describes everything in Harlan Coben's oeuvre.

Good To Know

Coben has four children with wife Anne, his sweetheart since age 20.

Coben advises aspiring writers thusly: "Write. Don't take classes. Don't join workshops. Don't listen to me," he told the Charlotte Austin Review. "Just write. Oh, and cut. Cut a lot. You're probably not editing yourself enough. Then rewrite. Then rewrite again. Repeat. Like with shampooing."

Coben says his mother was his best literary inspiration in an interview with the Page One literary newsletter. "We'd go to the old Barnes & Noble in Manhattan (back then, if you can believe this, I think there was only one) and spend the entire day. We didn't have much money back then and we almost never bought toys -- but we were always allowed to get whatever books we wanted."

In our interview, Coben shared more fun facts:

"I once worked as a tour guide in the Costa del Sol of Spain."

"I pretty much only wear Lilly Pulitzer ties because my best friend owns the company."

    Avoid

Take Harlan's advice in prologue and skip this one. Overflowing with stereotypes and credibility problems.

If you can move past some cheesy dialogue, a message that feels like it's being preached to you, and the plot point that involves a character opening a package that she has not business opening, "Miracle Cure" actually resolves itself to being a decent novel with a mastermind I did not expect (flat out insanity may be the main motivation.) Good thing, because for awhile this book just wasn't very good, but leave it to Harlan Coben to make it a worthwhile read in the end, even if, at least with the normal Coben standard, this is no miracle of a read.

~Crossing Winds~ chapter 3~ by Krazy aka skystar

((Sorry this is honna be SHORT! I promise to make te next one a long as possible)) What? She turned to see what tey were looking at, an in response they 'awwed'. She turned back confused, an it snapped. They were looking at her with wildly happy expressions. She was temtped to smack them with her wing. Well, arm, since she had no feathers and was ugly-looking. Her father Shakra swept down gracefully in one flick of his wings. To her amazement it looed as if a talonful of stars had outlined his rippling figure. "Wow! Shes amazed!" Remarked her mother.
Morning dew trickled down and splattered onher head. She shivered unpleasantly. By now she hdad peered up at the sky, noticing the silence that began to onsume the earth. And darkness followed. She jumped. Crack! She whippe her sll head around to find two curious chicks poking their head out of the white eggshells. She ignored them vaguely and closed her eyes. SHe drifted into a peaceful slumber.(((btw what should her nae be?))
