Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin
Using Romanesque art, Tomie dePaola has chosen to recount twelve miracles that Jesus performed during his ministry on earth. The colors are bright and attractive to children, but different from natural art forms. Beginning with turning water into wine, Jesus calms the storm, then asked his disciples, "Where is your faith?" In dePaola's retelling of the loaves and the fishes, he reminds the reader that Jesus immediately withdrew. He knew they were going to make him their king. When the crippled man at the pool of Bethesda asks for help, Jesus shows him how to bypass the pool. He spoke, "Rise," and the man walked away carrying his bed. Everyone is amazed at the faith of the centurion, but the people laughed when Jesus said, "She is not dead. She is sleeping." This is a collection of Bible stories perfect for sharing with a child or a class. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin
