Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
Miranda Cosgrove was just three years old when a talent agent noticed her singing and dancing for her parents in a restaurant. Her parents signed her with the agent and, as this title in the "Star Biographies" series reveals, Cosgrove quickly got work in commercials and as a child model. In addition to working at such a young age, Cosgrove did well in school and was interested in music, fencing, and horseback riding. Her big breaks came when she won roles in the movie School of Rock and the television show Drake & Josh. These days, Cosgrove can be found starring in her own show on Nickelodeon, iCarly. She performed the theme song for her new show and sang on the soundtrack, which led to Cosgrove recording a solo album. It is noted that Cosgrove is polite, professional, approachable, and classy. The author examines Cosgrove's schooling, interests, charity work, life as a teen star, and future plans. Devoted fans will probably enjoy this despite its slight content. This series may attract older teen readers interested in the celebrities, but the wholesome content and writing level are aimed at more of a tween audience. Short chapters, bright colors, a varied layout, quotes from interviews, sidebars, and ample pictures make this short book a quick read. A glossary, further reading, index, and links to internet sites via the publisher's FactHound website are included. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor

Gr 3-6-These fluffy biographies are visually attractive but have little substance. The bold graphics and colorful sidebars give the series a teen-magazine feel, with topics such as hairstyles and fashion choices at the forefront. Short, simple sentences discuss family background, career highlights, and other personal bits of information that generally stick to more positive, less controversial topics. Tweens looking for fun browsing will be drawn to these books, but that's about their only use.
