Overview

In the introduction to her book, Mirror Makeovers and Savvy Insights for the Everyday Gal Surviving Cancer and Baldness with a Sense of Humor, author Regina Savage writes she isn't going to "tackle the sad things about cancer in this book; I'm going to tackle all the good things that cancer helps your find out about yourself, all the good things mostly within you-your spirit and your willingness to fight and move forward and tackle this monster with your will and sense of humor intact." And this is exactly what she does.
Savage takes a horrible disease and helps you to find a sense of humor, to laugh at her journey as she does, and to find humor in your own. She has you sit in front of the mirror and draw hair on your reflection, but not just hair, your emotions.
For Savage, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36, the experience was about her hair-her waist-length, never-been-cut blonde hair. But instead of bemoaning the loss of her locks, Savage decided to take a lighter approach and to deal with what was really bothering her; her emotions.
In this lovely, short, easy read, Savage takes you on a journey of discovering your emotions and doing that by drawing them on the mirror in the form of hair. She gives you examples and encourages you to find your own. Aside from a few more hair options, such as the dual cheerleader ponytails or a biker babe motorcycle helmet, Savage also offers tips on how to draw tiaras, eyebrows, eye lashes, earrings, and sunglasses. It is all in good fun, which is Savage's point.
With the creative, fun, and whimsical illustrations of Darren Cranford, it is hard not to get motivated and get moving on your mirror makeovers right away.
So instead of the doomsday, clinical approach to cancer, give this hands-on, never been done before approach a try, you will not be sorry. And if not for yourself, it makes a perfect gift for someone who you want to fight, survive and heal through laughter during their journey.
If you like the NookBook Version, you will love the Hardcover as it comes equipped with markers to get started right away, it is the perfect gift!

Dr. Francine Zorehkey
"I've heard it said that cancer is a disease of enormous cruelty and unpredictability. Going through cancer treatment can sometimes be severe and exhausting. It can most certainly bring on depression. Regina's book has a way to help a person choose to have a better day no matter the difficulty. There is no cancer book as unique, uplifting and completely fun. As an individual working with women who have cancer, I find that Mirror Makeovers can be used as a tool in the emotional healing process."

"This is a lovely book, short, sweet, hilarious. You sit in front of the mirror, you have your reflection, your bald head, and color markers, and then you draw hair that represents how you feel: anything to get it out and have a sense of humor and this gal is hilarious!"

It's adorable, a valuable, valuable book to give someone as a gift or give to yourself."

"Savage decided to take a lighter approach. She gathered some colored markers, sat down in front of the mirror, and drew hair on her reflection. On good days, she was the perky person under the blonde bouffant hairdo with the bow. On bad days, she drew snakes covering her head in the mirror. "Medusa days" as she calls them, are when you're mad at the world.

The lighthearted illustrations complete the package of a fun, creative way to get through cancer."

"Regina hits the nail on the head when she shares her own personal story of the cancer experience. She is able to put "Can" in the experience of cancer. You "can" find hopefulness. You "can" find humor. You "can" move forward in a positive direction. This book, with its whimsical characters helps cancer survivors know that their feelings are normal and it allows for an outlet to experience them in a positive way."

"This book is truly inspirational! A real page turner, very creatively constructed, and emotionally refreshing. I love the illustrations! I've had close friends and family members who have gone through chemo, and I wish we could have had this book at the time. Ms. Savage knows what cancer patients go through - she is able to really connect with the reader. And her humor is enjoyable. You will laugh and cry at the same time while reading! This book is a MUST for anyone going through cancer."

Meet the Author

After battling cancer and winning, Regina Savage is celebrating her tenth year as a Breast Cancer Survivor. Her spirit and determination lead her to write this book with the hope of encouraging others struggling with the disease. After her diagnosis unfolded, she began to draw on her unique sense of humor and determination to get through the effects of treatment. She then began to realize that her unusual approach might be helpful to other “everyday gals” also struggling to survive cancer, their emotions and baldness. Along with the book, Savage founded a competitive paddling team which travels the world to create awareness about the positive effects of exercise after cancer.
She is also a motivational speaker, speaking to such groups as Susan G. Komen, FORCE - Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered, and support groups nationwide.

I met Regina a couple of years ago. When I found out she wrote this book I just had to have it. I am a survivor of breast cancer, but I did not need chemo. I had no idea how that must affect the women who do. Hair loss on top of your very womanhood being affected. How much can one woman take? I was lucky. Regina's book made me remember how important an upbeat attitude is. It also made me realize we are not alone in this fight and with some humor we can get though this and just about anything else in our lives. Wonderful book to read even if you have never been down this road, or a great gift to give a friend. Read it together and show her she is not alone.
