Overview

Old Mrs. Johnson lives alone in the forest and loves to knit sweaters and mittens for her grandchildren in the city. One day, when returning from a visit to the city, her solitude comes to an end when her mischievous forest neighbors reveal themselves in a delightfully colorful fashion—someone took her yarn. The colorful mystery is solved when the birds, rabbits, snakes, trees, and other dwellers of Mrs. Johnson's neighborhood are seen playing with the yarn. Suddenly the forest doesn't seem so lonely, and the visiting grandkids take great delight getting to know its inhabitants. This picture book is a lesson for both young and old to connect with one's surroundings and embrace the role of good neighbors with the rest of the natural world, whether in the city or in the forest.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Grandma Johnson lived all alone in her little house in the forest spending her days sitting in her living room knitting sweaters for her grandchildren. She was never lonely. One time, after visiting her grandchildren she discovered that all the yarn she kept in her shed was missing. The mystery was solved the next day when she saw strands of colorful yarn hanging from the trees in the forest. Mischievous animals had taken the yarn and Granny realized she had neighbors and was not alone. The friendly animals (bears, raccoon, birds, foxes) came to visit her as did her grandchildren. Granny was happy and sat on her porch knitting sweaters surrounded by her new friends, the animals. The stated intent of this story is to be a lesson to old and young alike to connect with and embrace one's surroundings and be good neighbors. The uneventful, flat story leaves the reader unsatisfied and the message is too simplistic and trite. There is little mystery to hold a child's interest. Bland illustrations that appear to be computer generated do little to lift the story from the doldrums. This can easily by skipped and never missed. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
