Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Exorcist Lucian Negru condemned his girlfriend Rachael to Hell to save the soul of his sister Catarina, who doesn't want to be saved in the first place and continues to side with evil fallen angels in a war against Heaven. Eventually, after being tortured by his ungrateful sister for years, Lucian escapes and rescues a perky young girl named Lindsay from Hell in penance. Meanwhile, Rachael survives but is partially possessed by a demon—and it's all rather turgid and curiously unaffecting. The book takes place in the battleground between Heaven and Hell—a place called Woerld, presumably because it is full of woe. Woerld is supposedly vast and full of dramatic battles and sieges, but this is overshadowed by the protagonist's personal pain in detail, leaving the setting vague and claustrophobic. While Frohock is a promising first-time author with clean prose and original characters, the story struggles. This is a book for fans of melodramatic grim, dark fantasy, but the average reader will lose patience. (July)
Library Journal
Exiled from the Order of Katharos for abandoning his lover, Rachael, to the torments of Hell in exchange for the soul of his sister Catarina, former exorcist Lucian Negru receives a second chance at salvation when he rescues a child from Earth who wanders through the Crimson Veil into the parallel realm of Woerld. In order to save young Lindsay's life, however, he must break the compact governing his exile and open a portal into Hell—and that action condemns him to death. Frohock sets her first novel on an alternate Earth, a quasimedieval realm that is aware of the existence of Earth's technology and that serves as a battleground for the war between Heaven and Hell. With richly developed, complex characters and a talent for portraying the horrific nature of evil, the author relates a compelling tale of faith rediscovered, trust regained, and hope reawakened. VERDICT This exceptional dark historical fantasy debut should particularly appeal to fans of medieval fiction, tales of holy warriors, and fantasies that feature strong women characters. The religious aspects, integral to the story without being overwhelming, should interest readers of faith-based fantasy. Recommended for most libraries.

    Excellent Dark Fantasy

Miserere is an excellent debut by Teresa Frohock. Lucian is an exiled Katharoi (one of God's chosen warrior) in Woerld, a realm between Hell and Earth, protecting Heaven from being invaded by the Fallen. Lucian betrayed his lover to save his sister, and in turn lost everything, including his freedom. As the tale begins, Lucian has escaped his captors, and rescues a Foundling child from Hell. The two embark on a journey for save haven and, for Lucian, potential redemption. He encounters his former lover, and they are thrown together in a quest to save Lindsay, and their realm. Full of rich descriptions and heartfelt emotion, this novel not only kept me guessing, it kept me deeply invested in the characters. Frohock's writing is literary and lovely, but constantly engaging. If you like dark fantasy with a tinge of horror, this is a great read.

    Great read!

Bridges a gap between urban & traditional fantasy. Something for anyone who loves the genre.
