Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
Frannie is all excited about her father's fortieth birthday party because a fortune-teller is coming. Frannie sees this as a way to learn about another job she wants to do. She opens her business in the school cafeteria during lunchtime, complete with her own business cards and a "crystal ball," which is really a bowling ball borrowed from her friend. Her helpful assistants choose people that might want Frannie to tell their fortunes. She predicts that one of her classmates needs glasses but her biggest client is Eric, a trumpet player. She tells Eric that only the woodwinds can work in the upcoming concert. This particular fortune comes to have some rather unexpected results and Frannie decides fortune-telling may not be in her near future. Perhaps she can find a spot in a rock band; the next installment hints at that. The book would be more appealing if the fonts did not change unexpectedly and contain a few made up words, possibly invented by Frannie. These words may help reveal her spunky personality, but a first-time reader may find it distracting. As a part of the "Frankly, Frannie" series, this installment can find fans in second and third graders, particularly high-achieving girls. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk
