Miss Hickory is an old country doll made from an apple-wood twig with a hickory nut as a head. She wears a blue-and-white gingham dress and her eyes are inked on. She lives in a corncob house until it is taken over by lazy Chipmunk. Now, Miss Hickory has no choice but to move. Aided by her friend Crow, who shows her a delightful robin’s nest in a McIntosh tree, she begins a new life.
Unfortunately, Miss Hickory has a hard head and though Squirrel and Mr. T. Willard, the cat, want to be her friends, she rebuffs them with harsh words. Despite that, she has many adventures in the woods that winter. She survives quite well, until she criticizes Squirrel one time too many. Miss Hickory is a whimsical fantasy about forest and barn animals that brims with homespun wisdom and charm.
