Overview

Ima Hogg had an unfortunate name, but a very fortunate life. The only daughter of flamboyant Texas Gov. James S. Hogg, young Ima had the best education, foreign trips and musical training at the National Conservatory and in Berlin.

Wealthy from her father's oil money, she could have led a life of indolence. Instead, shared her remarkable gifts with the people of Texas.

"Miss Ima" became perhaps Houston's leading benefactor during her long life, helping found the Houston Symphony Orchestra, serving on the school board, donating substantial sums to education, and becoming a power in the Texas Democratic Party. She died in 1975, at age 93.
