Overview

Can Miss Julia spring J. D. Pickens from a sheriff's clutches and investigate a cult-plus keep up appearances as a proper Southern lady?

Miss Julia simply can't abide sitting idle. With young Lloyd moving out and husband Sam off to the Holy Land for two weeks, Miss Julia's feeling restless already. Maybe it's time for that overdue home makeover.

But before she can even pick a color scheme, Miss Julia must race to the rescue of Hazel Marie's new husband. J.D. has gone missing while on his latest private investigation job. And police in West Virginia have detained an injured man fitting his description. Now it's up to Miss Julia and Etta Mae to free him before he cusses himself into a jail cell.

Back in Abbotsville, wealthy eccentric Agnes Whitman has returned to town with a following of misfits. Could they be a religious cult set on converting the locals? And will Miss Julia get back in time to stop them? One thing's for sure: she won't waste time watching paint dry-no matter which shade of beige is the latest rage.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Ross’s delightful 13th Miss Julia cozy set in Abbotsville, N.C. (after 2011’s Miss Julia Rocks the Cradle), Miss Julia decides to tackle long-neglected redecorating projects while her husband, Sam, is on a trip to the Holy Land. Home improvement gets put on hold after Miss Julia learns that her stepdaughter Hazel Marie’s PI husband, J.D. Pickens, is in the hospital in West Virginia, where he was working on a case, and the local sheriff refuses to release him. Miss Julia and nurse’s aide Etta May Wiggins drive to West Virginia, where they wind up stooping to devious and amusing means to rescue J.D. Back home, Miss Julia has to contend with kooky Agnes Whitman, a former Abbotsville resident who’s returned with a host of tattooed cult followers. Those who like smiles with their crimes will be satisfied. 4-city author tour. Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider Literary Agents. (Apr.)
Kirkus Reviews
The trouble with men is they constantly need women to rescue them. Miss Julia, so glutted with southern manners that she's befriended the mistress and child of her first husband, the late Wesley Springer, receives a call from that woman's new husband, Mr. Pickens, asking help of Miss Julia's current husband. Mr. Pickens, a private eye, doesn't say why or where he is exactly, but since Miss Julia's better half is off touring the Holy Land, it falls to her to find the caller. Leaving the architect, the carpenters, the painters and the plumbers to get on with redecorating her home, she insists that the bodacious Etta Mae, a repository of medical know-how, accompany her on a trip to the wilds of West Virginia where, she believes, Mr. Pickens has been searching for a missing person. Currently, however, the searcher's sequestered in a hospital room with gun wounds on his backside, any contact with him forbidden by the local sheriff. Undaunted, Miss Julia and Etta Mae, after an agonizing visit to an assembly of snake-handlers, climb through windows, don disguises, manhandle Mr. Pickens into their car and drive him home to recover. That pesky sheriff, enamored of Etta Mae, follows just as Miss Julia embarks on a rescue of Adam, a worker at her house who's gotten entangled with a slew of tattooed, body-pierced zealots out at Agnes Whitman's place. Plot loopholes abound, along with religious claptrap that allows the decorous heroine (Miss Julia Rocks the Cradle, 2011, etc.) to proselytize for her more temperate Presbyterian lifestyle.

Ann B. Ross Did It Again

Ann B. Ross has done it again with another great book with Miss Julia and her escapades. Miss Julia gets into more adventures than someone half her age. Miss Julia can't even redecorate her house without "something" out of the ordinary happening! Ms Ross is such a wonderful author and is so descriptive, you are right there with Miss Julia during her predicaments. I laugh out loud all the time when I read and picture in my mind these situations! Her sidekicks, Lillian and Etta Mae add to the craziness! I can't think of one Miss Julia book that I haven't really enjoyed including this one!

I thought this was one of the better Miss Julia books. She is a feisty older lady who thinks the world is at her beck and call and she is not afraid to take charge to get things done. I have watched her come from a cold hearted older woman to an older woman with a warm heart for those who she really loves and for the causes she believes in. This book displayed a lot of that warmheartedness: for Sam, for Lloyd, for Lillian, for Hazel Marie and the twins, and now, J. D. Pickens. This book made me laugh out loud, and I liked that.

    Love the extended family

I've enjoyed all the books Ann wrote since moving the Hendersonville. Her use of language puts a smile on my face as I enjoy her tails.

With JD missing and Hazel Marie unable to go after him because of the twins, who but Miss Julia (riding shotgun for Etta Mae) would be the one to head to his rescue? From a possible cult on the outskirts of Abbotsville to Miss Julia's stint as one of the buddies in a buddy road trip, Miss Julia to the Rescue was a fun read in what has been become a very long series. It's been amazing to follow Miss Julia's growth, particularly in her love for her deceased husband's son, Lloyd. The same woman who was so worried about appearances and how to manage her household on her own has created a wonderful family unit.

Not her best. Too much decorating descriptions. Some pages too repetitive.

Huge Miss Julia series fan. Well written and engaging just like all of the Miss Julia books. I did feel that Ms. Ross ran out of pages at the end of the book. Felt she ended the story quickly within a short amount of pages. However, that being said I am a huge fan and it was an enjoyable read.
