Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Those pesky fractions: which part is the numerator and which the denominator? Why, the numerator is up, and denominator is down. How do you get a grip on Celsius temperatures? "30 is hot, 20 is nice, 10 is chilly, 0 is ice." This book offers a dizzying arraying of mnemonic devices for remembering everything from tricky word spellings ("orangutan"— think: u turn orange when u tan) to geography trivia (presenting a long story you can tell yourself to remember the capitals of all the countries in South America) to literature (a rhyming ditty that includes the titles of all of Shakespeare's plays). While some of the particular mnemonics provided may seem unlikely to be helpful or necessary (are we ever going to want to use the mnemonic ICE TEA to remember the six most common word suffixes: -Ize, -Cy, -Ery, -Tion, -Ent, and -Able?), the general principles underlying memory-aiding strategies (rhymes, acrostics, stories, grouping, linking, pictures, acronyms, word play) are laid out clearly. This helpful compendium of mnemonic techniques with its proliferation of supporting examples should stimulate the right kind of brainy reader to hours of nerdy fun. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
