Miss Saigon [Original London Cast Recording]

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's followup to Les Miserables is another sung-through operetta with a serious theme and a classic source: They have placed Madame Butterfly in the waning days of the Vietnam War. Jonathan Pryce stands out as a pimp named the Engineer in this London cast recording, and the score has the same rock feel as Schonberg's Les Miserables music.

    So Sad, Yet Beautiful Music

Miss Saigon was such a sad story! It want to cry every time I listen to it. Lea Salonga has such a beautiful voice and sounds great on this CD! I must say that this is just about equal (in quality) to Les Mis if not better.

    It;s Beautiful Yet Very Sad

This CD is awesome. the voices are amazing and the story line is so simple yet so complicating. When I first heard it I was crying by the second half and I threw a shoe at my CD player for something that Chris does that i don;t wnat to tell anyone. Anyone who liked Epionin's voice from les Miserables will love Kim becaus it is the same chick. Wish she was in more musicals.

    OUTSTANDING MUSICAL!

Touching and powerful. Performances (especially Lea Salonga's and Jonathan Pryce's) are first-rate. No wonder it's among the top ten shows in musical theater history!

    Unbelievably AMAZING!

This album and play is absolutely phenomenal! Lea Salonga's voice stood out in the whole album with her songs. I completely disagree with someone who said that this album wasn't worth it. I guess you are a waste of time to listen to.

    Incredible songs and singers

Ms. Saigon opens doors to the talented Asians who have to fight for any role in Broadway. And what a show! Lea's crystal voice is amazing, there's no other like it.I can't wait to watch her as she reprises her role in the new ''Flower Drum Song'' that will open in Broadway in October.

    Superb performance!!! Highly recommended...

I truly salute everyone involved in the production of the play! All of them have given justice to the roles that they are asked to portray. I am very sure that a lot of people out there are too radical and gross on some things that displease them.True,we are entitled to our own opinions but I don't think that we still need negative feedbacks on the Original London Casts. These people went through the tedious screening process and have been proven worthy to be one of the acclaimed performers. It's not all easy to get there on stage!I know how it feels like...So, enough of the bombastic comments. I STILL BELIEVE that they all have the LUNGS of STEEL which only a few possess. What more can I say but,''ENCORE!'' Oh and one more thing,MS.LEA SALONGA did a great performance as KIM.She's got it all!Hey, I am your FAN!!! To Mr.Cameron Mckintosh, You have hired the best of the best!More Power...

BOUBIL AND SCHONBERG DO IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just purchased the recording of the London cast in a Wyoming music store, which by the way was no easy task. The score is breathtaking with the unimitable style of Boubil and Schonberg. The listener will find the same stunning themes of love, heatbreak and betrayal evident in Les Miserables. One can close thier eyes while listening to the beautiful intertwining of lyrics, voices, incredible orchestrations and artists as they absorb this magnificient musical journey through a heartbreaking era of time.

    Amazing!

Miss Saigon is one of the best musicals I've ever heard, and I'm a big fan of musicals. The emotion ranges from joy to love to anger to loathing and hopeful despair. I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but once you've heard this, you'll know what I mean. Lea Salonga IS Kim, the role was created for her and I can see why. Simon Bowman is a wonderful Chris, in ''Why God Why'' I can hear the confusion and despair in his voice...Jonathan Pryce is amazing, no other word for it. He's a sleaze as the Engineer, but you find yourself pitying him in spite of yourself. Claire Moore's rich, throaty voice is perfect for portraying the anger, jealousy, and love she shares for Chris. This is one of the best musical purchases you could ever make.

A great musical, a great recording

Since I have both the London cast recording and the complete recording I think I have a balanced opinion. Each set has its own exceptional qualities which you wish you could put on one CD. For instance, on the London cast John (Polycarpou) is fantastic while his Complete counterpart has a voice that can really annoy you; some of the harmonies and variations are better on the London recording. On the other hand you'll find the Chris of the Complete set to seem more believable. All in all, if you expect perfection, you'll be disappointed. But if you love the musical and the moving music, you will be amazed.

What is this person talkin about?

I'm sorry but that person has no idea. This person has no idea what they are talking about! This recording is unbelievable, i recommend it to anybody who loves the show and anybody who doesnt. It is incredible. I myself love the show and the recording is just as good as being there. I'm just waiting for a video release because i will be first in the que for it!

    In defense of Lea Salonga

In response to the bad review this cd got, I felt compelled to make a rebuttal. I've seen this musical on Broadway 4 or 5 times, and if you love the musical, you WILL love this cd. As for Lea Salonga, she originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. To say that she was horrible is an insult to its creators. They knew in an instant that she was the Kim they were looking for. Personally, I love Lea Salonga in all of the many roles she's played. I think she is a wonderful Kim. I highly recommend this cd!

    HORRIBLE

I can't believe I wasted my money on this... I love this show and I can't believe it was so ruined... My first complaint was that Lea Salonga was horrible. She dropped some parts down a couple times... I've never liked her, but I hated her this time. Simon Bowman... Yuck! MELODRAMA... The tempos were all much slower than performed on stage. While Claire Moore is fine, Ruthie Henshall tops her by far... buy the Complete Symphonic... It's much better and more like the show. The leads are MUCH better
