Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The spiky, redheaded teacher first introduced in Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook returns in Miss Smith Reads Again! by Michael Garland. This time, she opens a book about dinosaurs and transports her class to prehistoric pastures. When a pterodactyl takes Miss Smith off to its nest, it's up to the students to save her. (July) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Once again Zack is eager for school to resume because he knows that Miss Smith will be reading from her "special" book. Second grade has never been as enjoyable as when the teacher with the bright red hair and eclectic clothes begins to read aloud. Readers will be drawn in to predicting just what will happen next: as Miss Smith reads from the gilt-encrusted tome, the classroom is populated with the characters from the story line. Only when she finishes a story do the characters return to the book. The illustrations make it appear that the book acts like a gigantic vacuum "sucking" the images back to the confines of the book's covers. The story for this particular day involves the Lost World of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (this may prompt students to seek out the original book, which is really more suitable for older readers) and all of the attendant dinosaurs and exotic flora and fauna. The ubiquitous warning "do not interfere or you may change the story" is wasted on Nate who shouts out to warn Professors Challenger and Summerlee of the approach of a T. Rex. The alteration of the story line involves Miss Smith being taken off by a pterodactyl and summarily rescued by her students. Miss Smith finishes the story and everything disappears—except for the pterodactyl egg Nate purloined from the nest in which Miss Smith had been deposited until her rescue. Readers will enjoy predicting what the next day's story line will include. Garland's bright art style is unusual enough to reinforce the fantastic nature of the story line. The apparently computer generated art seems to be a mixture of paper cutting and collage techniques combined with some dreamy backgrounds done in water color.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Zack and his second-grade teacher, first featured in Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook (Dutton, 2003), have returned for another escapade, this time with a prehistoric twist. Miss Smith has an amazing book that, when read aloud, brings tales to life. As she begins to read Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World, her class is transported to an Amazonian jungle inhabited by a ferocious Tyrannosaurus rex. When Zack unintentionally changes the plot and the teacher disappears, the students must use their wits to survive. Luckily the young protagonist knows a bit about dinosaurs and is able to save Miss Smith and bring everyone safely back to the classroom-along with an extra traveler. While the first title introduced children to a story's magical powers through a multitude of recognizable characters from classic tales and nursery rhymes, this one focuses on a single story, and the nonstop action will win an even larger audience of fans. Youngsters will be drawn to the boldly colored computer-generated illustrations, particularly the jungle scenes, which show an interesting array of dinosaurs. A fun-filled literary adventure.-Maura Bresnahan, High Plain Elementary School, Andover, MA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
The second-grade teacher with the fiery orange brush cut and leather jacket introduced in Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook (2003) returns, opening her magical volume to transform the classroom into Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World. Thrills ensue, as the class meets some of the characters, evades a tyrannosaurus, rescues Miss Smith from a pterodactyl's nest and then, despite having broken the cardinal rule not to interfere with the storyline, returns to the present. In what reads like an editing error, readers are told twice that the children have escaped the toothy predator, and the relationship between Doyle's tale and this one is perfunctory at best. Still, the combination of dinosaurs, exciting adventures and a decidedly unconventional teacher who literally brings her lessons to life traverses familiar territory for Magic School Bus fans, and the glossy, elaborately detailed illustrations are another draw. My Class Loved It!

Evey year I read Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook to my second graders, and every year, it is a big hit. This book is a wonderful follow-up. The illustration style is fun and vibrant. Who wouldn't love to be in this hip teacher's class? My students noticed little picture clues throughout the story. Each one of my students has signed up to reserve this book for their weekly classroom bookbag. We can't wait for more sequels starring the Fabulous Miss Smith!
