Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
Twelve-year-old Mina Chestnut is thrilled to be spending the summer with her favorite aunt, Aunt Jill, who lives in Brooklyn. She will miss her two best friends, Liza and Sam, but she is excited to attend a prestigious art camp and spend time enjoying what New York City has to offer. Mina's art camp experience gets off to a rocky start though, when queen bee Paulette and Paulette's hangers-on make Mina question her talent and her ability to fit in. But Mina soon finds a friend at camp in feisty Gabriella, who lives down the block, and over the summer Gabriella introduces Mina to two friends and the exciting culture of Brooklyn. By the end of camp, Mina has learned to trust her artistic instincts and stretch herself creatively, make new friends, and fall in love with New York. This novel, part of the "Candy Apple Summer" series, is a fun and informative introduction to the art and culture of New York, particularly Brooklyn and Harlem. Mina is African-American, and emphasis is placed on introducing readers to African-American artists and artistic culture in and around New York City. While the plot is predictable and the outcome of the big art show a foregone conclusion, the interactions between Mina and her new friends ring true to life and are infused with compassion. An interesting aspect to the novel is the intertwining of this book with the two other books in the series. Mina sends her friends Liza and Sam presents from Brooklyn, and she receives gifts from them as well. In the two other books in the series, the presents Mina sends to her friends are also mentioned. Recommended for ages nine to twelve, although younger readers will probably enjoy it more. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp

Mina is spending the summer in New York City with her aunt while attending an art camp. Excited to be going to her first big camp, Mina's enthusiasm and love of art shine through. When she gets to the camp, however, one of the snobby girls is jealous of her and tries to make her life as miserable as possible. With a first-place prize on the line and her reputation as a great artist at stake, will Mina shine - or fall into the shadows? This quick read is cheery and charming. Mina's enthusiasm is contagious; her friends are likable and funny. The plot is intriguing and holds the reader's interest. Those who like realistic fiction, friendship, and self-discovery stories will enjoy reading MISS YOU, MINA.

I remember when that happened to me. I had to move from florida to texas. I miss all of my best friends. We used to have so much fun at the beach which was 4 blocks away. We lived right nect to each other. After we went to the beach we would get some mats and we would slide down my steps. Then once they slept over with me we would wake up around 3 in the morning and go swimming. It was for a dare. One of us had to jump in BARE. Some day i will move back and reunite with my friends.-¿•?<|@
