School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-3-Second-grader Liza wants to prove to her older siblings that she's competent and smart. She asks to borrow a precious trilobite fossil from her fifth-grade brother Jesse, but he refuses. Then she thinks of a way to have it for only a day, without his knowledge. Of course, the deception results in many more complications. Once "show and share" is over, the fossil disappears several times and then Jesse, in an unexpected visit to the second-grade classroom, almost discovers it under his nose. By the time Liza places the item gingerly back on his shelf, she has learned her lesson. This story flows well and has lots of natural dialogue. Liza's desire to be seen as mature and special will be followed with interest by young readers, and her boldness will delight them. Glass's illustrations are a cut above most in transitional chapter books of this kind. An appealing choice.-Linda Wicher, Highland Park Public Library, IL
