Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Rofofsky Marcus
Featuring Kit Kitteridge, the American Girl living during the Great Depression, this "A Kit Mystery" novel picks up Kit's story after her report about Grace, her recently adopted dog, saving the family's boarding house from a fire is published in the local newspaper. Once readers gain an understanding of this past story, they can easily follow the narrative although there is a slight feel of missing something. This book begins when a new boarder moves into the Kitteridge home, demanding among other things that Grace sleep outside. On the first night, Grace disappears from the back porch, leading Kit to investigate as part of her cub reporter job for the Cincinnati Register and because she misses her dog. Along with her friends, Ruthie and Stirling, Kit solves a mystery involving dog thefts and gets her dog back. As with all "American Girl" books, this title ends with a chapter called, "Looking Back: A Peek into the Past," this time focusing on pets during the Great Depression and dog shows. The book's twelve chapters will keep any girl entertained, although the typical American Girl Mystery theme might bore the older or more mature reader who does not want to follow the same story of girl has problem, girl meets new adult friend who can help, girl solves mystery, all is well. There are twists to the plot, such as when Kit first suspects two neighborhood bullies of taking her dog, which will help children learn to deal with gaining all the information before falsely accusing someone. This book is a good fictional account of childhood during the Great Depression, with parents losing jobs and going elsewhere for work, children having to work to help support the family, and learning to entertain oneself without money.
