Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Foucart
Sam Dennison is a liar. He lies all the time about everything from why he did not do his homework, to little stories he passes off as truth, for no reason at all. But he and his father come up with a signal to help Sam realize when he is lying and to help him stop. For a while it seems to be working. But Sam's old ways catch up with him when he sees his father taken away by two men and no one will believe him. Later his friend Josh is convinced when they find Mr. Dennison's apartment torn apart, but a neighbor thinks the boys did it themselves and scares them away from calling the police. Sam sticks with his story, though, and with a little help from Josh's aunt at the DMV and Sam's quick thinking in taking down a license plate number, Sam and Josh figure out where they might find Sam's dad. Parts of the plot make it seem that adults will not listen to children. Sam's mother will not pay attention to his worries. Mr. Dennison's neighbor threatens to tell the police the boys tore up the apartment themselves if they contact them. While this is similar to situations in many other books, for a young audience this could all seem very frustrating.

What would you do if your dad got kidnapped? The book Missing by M. Sobel Spirn is about this boy named Sam who lies all the time. He lies to his teachers, parents, and friends. Also his parents are split up. One day when he was going to his dad¿s house, he saw two suspicious men come out of his house with his dad. So he tells his mom but since he lies so much his mom doesn¿t believe him. And the only person he can convince to believe him is his friend Josh. So they try and find his dad, but the closer they get to finding him the more dangerous things become. Will they give up? Or will they keep trying? Missing was a great book to read. When I was reading I felt like I was actually there. Once I started reading it I never wanted to put the book down. This novel was very exciting. I recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries and just wants a good, fun, exciting read.
