Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Kellogg revisits the story told in his 1974 The Mystery of the Missing Red Mitten, about a girl who imagines the most exciting locations for her lost mitten, this time with full-color illustrations. Ages 4-8. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
When Annie begins her search for her lost mitten, the fifth this winter, she thinks it would be easier to grow them on a tree. Her imagination soars as she sees herself picking them in fall so that she'll have plenty of mittens to give for Christmas and Valentine's Day. Steven Kellogg makes each of these scenes a celebration. But Annie knows nothing will be right until she solves The Missing Mitten Mystery. Kellogg's snowy landscape shows the vastness of Annie's search. No bird took it for a nest, no mouse is using it for a sleeping bag or a Halloween costume. Where is it? Follow the clues. 2000, Dial, $15.99. Ages 3 to 7. Reviewer: Jan Lieberman
Kirkus Reviews
Kellogg (Give the Dog a Bone, see above, etc.) remakes his Mystery of the Missing Red Mitten (1974) into a larger, longer, and more colorful ramble through snowcovered landscapes. Suddenly aware that she's short a mitten after a long day of play, Annie sets off on a frantic hunt. Her panic gives way to joie de vivre, though, as she finds articles of clothing left in the snow by her playmates, builds fantasies about where her mitten might have gotten to, and thinks about planting a mitten tree, so she'll always have mittens to give away. In the wideangle illustrations, a low winter sun sheds buttery light over rolling hills, snowdrifts, the wandering child, and her seriouslooking dog. Any reader who has ever worried about getting in trouble for losing something will be drawn into Annie's search—which ends joyfully, after a brief rain shower washes her snowman's outer layer away to expose the red "heart" within. The plot and pictures have undergone considerable change, but this is still suffused with Kellogg's characteristic warmth and charm and all the better for being easier to read to a group. Used it in school with my classes for many years. They loved trying to guess where the mitten could be and relating times when they lost their mittens. The storyline was simple and real. The pictures were the same. It makes a great Valentine's story. We also did a red mitten Valentine craft. Loved everything about the book.
