Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Toni Jourdan
The Mighty Mighty Monsters are a flashback to the classic movie monsters of the 1930s. Dracula, Wolfman, Invisible Man and more are now classmates in a series of graphic novels dealing with the day to day drudgeries of being elementary school students. When they go on a field trip to the local museum they venture into an area show casing the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. When the tour guide introduces them to King Tut's tomb they are surprised when they actually get to "meet" King Tut. The tour guide faints as the Mummy rises from his coffin. The Mighty Mighty Monsters are quick to befriend King Tut, adding him to their "monster gang." It's a simple story of friendship and understanding differences utilizing vibrant colored cartoon creatures. At the end of the book is a brief look at the history of the young King Tut followed by a glossary, discussion questions and writing prompts. It delves deeper than the storyline allowing a parent or teacher to prompt the young reader into learning more about the Mummy Tut and to ask themselves some great questions stemming from the basic storyline. The ease of the writing style moves the story along quickly while tying into the bold graphic images. Young fans of these monsters are sure to enjoy their adventures in everyday life.
