Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
A mixture of realistic photos and brightly colored illustrations fill the pages of this picture book, the first in the "Adventures of Riley" series. This book takes Riley to Madagascar to film lemurs with his Uncle Max and Aunt Martha. A bit confusing at times for young readers, each two-page spread features a boxed scientific fact from a different scientist next to the story's action. For example, Laurence J. Dorr, a Botany Curator at the Smithsonian Institution, offers information on the realistically photographed Baobab Tree while the characters are parked next to it in their drawn vehicle. The leaf-tailed gecko, blue coua, and Parson's chameleon are just some of the wildlife highlighted in boxed scientist features. Readers four to six years old will enjoy following Riley's story about his Madagascar adventure, while older readers may take the time to read the scientific fact boxes. The book includes a "Riley's World Passport" to encourage readers to visit an educational web site. Part of the "Adventures of Riley" series.
