Meet the Author

Stephen King
Stephen King
Few authors have tapped into our secret fears as adeptly as Stephen King, Master of the Macabre and one of the most widely read novelists writing today. With his trademark blend of fantasy, horror, and psychological suspense, this prolific and immensely popular contemporary writer continues to remind us that evil is still a potent force in the world.

Biography

Fiction powerhouse Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947. As a student at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, became active in political causes, and met his wife, the former Tabitha Spruce. In the early years of his marriage, King augmented his meager teacher's salary by selling short stories to men's magazines. Then, in 1973 he hit pay dirt: his novel Carrie was accepted for publication, and a major paperback deal provided the means for him to leave teaching and concentrate full-time on writing. Since then, the prolific author has never looked back.

Dubbed the Master of the Macabre for his domination of the horror genre, King has also written bestselling thrillers, mysteries, fantasies, novellas, and short stories, many of which have been turned into blockbuster films and miniseries (A partial list includes Carrie, The Shining, The Stand,, Misery, It, The Shawshank Redemption, The Langoliers, Stand by Me, and The Green Mile). He also has two works of nonfiction to his credit: a gorgeously crafted memoir/scribbler's how-to (On Writing) and Faithful, a chronicle of the Boston Red Sox' stellar 2004 season, cowritten with Stewart O'Nan. In 2003, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

In between books, the indefatigable King performs in the Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock band that includes among its rotating personnel fellow authors Dave Barry and Amy Tan; attends as many Boston Red Sox games as is humanly possible; and contributes with his wife, Tabitha, to many local and national charities.

Good To Know

Don't believe everything you read about Stephen King. Among the gossip circulating about the scribe is the rumor that he is going blind. King assures his fans that while he is genetically predisposed to a disease called macular degeneration, which could result in blindness, he is not actually going blind.

King is probably one of the most easily recognizable authors alive, and it's not just because of his string of bestsellers. King has appeared in a number of films based on his work, including Pet Semetary, Thinner, and The Stand.

If you've ever wondered why Stephen King has written several books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, there is actually a very simple explanation: King is so prolific that he felt it necessary to create an alter-ego so that he could publish more than one book a year. The name was a hastily hobbled together combination of writer Richard Stark (ironically, a pseudonym for Donald Westlake) and Randy Bachman of rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

    I'd give this 4.5 stars...

Imagine this: you are stranded in a grocery store with a bunch of other people, some sane and some not so sane, while a fog-like mist surrounds the store and is enshrouding a mass of creatures that seem from a different dimension. Sound like a creepy story line? It's better than that. Stephen King, the "Master of the Macabre", creates some truly out-of-this-world creatures that lurk in the mist. But....he makes the atmosphere inside the store almost as dangerous as the outside by adding in some human pandemonium. It's all about adaptability. Some people don't cope well and start to lose it. The most fearsome by far is the witch-like Mrs. Carmody preaching the end times and expiation. She believed in a biblical reason for the mist. Others suggested The Arrowhead project, a government preserve outside of town. Whatever is behind the mist, it's classic King!

The Mist a nonstop action packed novel

In the book, a father and son go to the local grocery store after the worst storm that there city has seen in a long time. While at the grocery store a mysterious thick mist comes over the city, but the mist is not what they are concerned about it is the creatures that lurk in this mist. As the story progresses it shows how the must try to survive and defended the grocery story from this horrible creatures that are out to kill them. Will they survive this horrible event read and find out.
The Mist by Stephen King was a 5 star action packed horror novel that just keeps on getting more interesting the more you read. This book is great if you enjoy scary, creepy, or just plan weird events. This book kept me guessing as to what would happen next, the whole time I was reading it. There is never a slow part in the whole story. This book deals with how people will react to post-apocalyptic events, it shows how people will pick a leader in that type of situation no matter how silly this leader maybe. I thought that it was interesting the way he show how people begin to go crazy without civilization. This book was one of the best that I have ever read and I highly recommend it.

    Stephen King's e-book samples are a rip-off....

I have downloaded more than one sample of Mr. King's books. The samples download only a few pages (compared to other e-book samples) and most of the pages are credits, etc. One is given 3-5 pages of the actual book (at most). This policy needs to be revisisted.

    Very Good

The mist is a novella from skeleton crew, extended and made into a short book. I loved this book, it was actually the first king book i had ever read, it slows down in parts and just when u get bored it picks right back up and gets ur heart pounding. GREAT book...HORRIBLE movie(the ending was the worst i had ever seen)

The Fog on the East Coast

An eerie fog rolls across the town of Antonio Bay, California. Odd occurances follow. Ghostly apparitions appear. Murder and mayhem are close behind. Oh, wait a minute that's the 1975 John Carpenter classic film The Fog. King must've seen this one and wrote about it happening on the east coast but decided to rename it The Mist. So sad Stephen plagarizes copy such as this to pander inferior texts to the reading masses.

    A reviewer

When I first started this book, it was actually pretty good and held my interest. King lost me when he brought in these weird creatures in the fog, without any explanation. I am like 'oh, come on...' Now IF he had somehow linked all this to the military things going on, or some other phenomena in a solid way, I could have perhaps, stayed with him and tried to believe. I was very disappointed overall. in my opinion he got lazy on this book and never really gave us any type of woven story fabric, as is his norm. My opinion of King has always been that he is a brilliant writer, but I am always just a bit disturbed by his use of profanity and smut content. I am not a prude by any means, but I find it so uneccessary to pollute the storyline, without just cause. Maybe it is for effect, but doesn't he know that he writes so tremndously well without all that? The fling in the manager's office...totally out of storyline.

    James Herbert's The Fog

To the person who keeps referring to this work, I don't see how King lifted anything, except for the fact that he wrote about a mist enveloping a town. That is all. Did you read the book at all?? There are no other similarities at all. "The Mist" is a story about a fog enveloping parts of a town due to the errors of the military who open up a portal and horrible creatures come through.
If you had your way, no writer would ever be able to write on any subject for fear of being accused of plagerism. I guess the people who wrote "Mighty Joe Young" should be accused of plagerism since they wrote about a large ape in love with a girl which sounds so much like "King Kong". Get real!!

    Misty

This is a not-so-short short story with an interesting premise and a page turner at best. If you've seen the film, don't skip the book, for the ending is different. Great intense read.

    This book is epic.

    The Mist
I enjoyed reading this book because it was very scary and always kept me on edge. Basically what it is about is a normal guy called Dave who started to notice weird things happening to his lakeside house in Maine. Then as if things couldn't get any worse people start disappearing whenever the mist is around. Overall I think it was one of Steven King's best books.

Although I did enjoy this book, I think it is a rip-off to pay 7.99 for a short story of 134 pages, especially one that was printed previously under another title ! ! ! ! ! ! GREED, SHAME ON YOU.
